Recap / The Cleveland Show S 1 E 4 Birth Of A Salesman

Go To

Cleveland looks for a job. Meanwhile, Rallo and Roberta don't like how well behaved Junior is being with Donna, as it's making them look worse, by comparison.

Tropes:

  • Always Someone Better: When Cleveland gets employed at Waterman Cable, he starts one-upping the former best worker, Tim at everything, slowly driving the latter to jealousy, and later, depression.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: Rallo is too lazy to get up off the couch, to turn on the TV, so he throws a book at it, hitting the "power on" button. He turns to the camera of his own TV show, and tells the audience, "Don't laugh, America. Don't laugh.", as this is supposed to be a social commentary, on how lazy audiences are in real life.
  • Emotion Suppression: Contrary to his delightfully, innocent demeanor, Junior turns out to be bottling up some very deep pain, regarding the divorce of Cleveland and Loretta. When Rallo and Roberta mess up his bed, he teeters on the edge of an emotional breakdown and says "The sheets must not be divorced! The sheets must never be divorced."
Rallo: [stunned] ... Fuck, dude ...
  • Got Me Doing It: In the opening, when Rallo and Cleveland bicker about being Herbie Hancock fans, Cleveland attempt to hum the song "Rockit", but sings "Axel F" instead. When Rallo tries to correct him, he ends up humming "Axel F" as well. In his own words, Cleveland "Herbie Hancock-blocked" him.
  • Humiliating Wager: Terry offers to buy Tim a steak in exchange for showing his penis.
  • Male Frontal Nudity: Tim does end up showing his penis on-screen. Unsurprisingly this was censored on TV airings but it remains censored on the unrated DVD.
  • Nice Guy: Junior becomes hated by Rallo and Roberta for being this.
  • Overly Long Gag: Cleveland's cutaway gag, about singing about Mini-Malls.
  • Pixellation: Tim's penis is censored with this method.
  • Retirony: Parodied. On Cleveland's job hunt, one of his jobs is a cop, two days from retirement. During this job, Cleveland and another cop, have to brave it all, and enter a building, with an active shooter. Cleveland refuses to risk his life, as he's too close to retirement to die, so the other cop goes in for him, and gets himself instantly killed.
Cleveland: [deadpan] Oh well, ... I'm two days from retirement.
  • The Roast: Rallo and Roberta give one to Junior.
  • Shout-Out: Cleveland references ET when Tim exposes himself.
    Cleveland: ET's finger! Phone home!
