"Matthew 4:24" is the third episode of season 2 of The Chosen.

A long, exhausting day turns into night as the disciples help Jesus deal with a large crowd hoping to be healed. Around the campfire, over dinner, the group tried to get to know each other better. But tensions erupt.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Bottle Episode: Set in a single location (the campfire close to where Jesus is healing a long line of people), and an in-depth exploration of several characters mindsets and histories.
  • Campfire Character Exploration: The episode includes extended character exploration around the campfire, especially Little James, Mother Mary, Simon, and Matthew.
  • Lower-Deck Episode: The entire series tends to focus on the disciples, followers, and others who encounter Jesus, rather than on Jesus himself. However, this episode takes it to an extreme: Jesus shows up only at the very end, exhausted from healing the crowds of people. The rest of the episode focuses on his disciples and followers.
  • Mythology Gag: The concept of Jesus becoming overwhelmed by dealing with so many sick people was previously explored in Jesus Christ Superstar. Although it should be noted that the musical and this episode don’t show him healing the sick. note
  • The Oner: The opening scene is an impressive 15-minute tracking shot.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Simon gives one to Matthew around the campfire.
    • Could also fall under Jerkass Has a Point especially coupled with him following his strong point with an unwillingness to accept any apology he demands and a refusal to forgive
