Recap / The Casagrandes S 1 E 9 Away Game Monster Cash

Go To

Away Game: Abuela worries that Ronnie Anne and Bobby will want to live at their Dad's new apartment permanently.

Monster Cash: Carl hosts a haunted tour based on Abuela's tale of El Cucuy, and learns that this story may not be fiction.

"Away Game" contains examples of:

  • Amicable Exes: This episode confirms that this is the case with Maria and Arturo—unlike su propia mama, Maria doesn't mind Bobby and Ronnie Anne staying at their dad's place, even pointing out to Rosa that it's normal for the kids to spend some weekends with Arturo.
  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: Despite the fact that Rosa charged him with looking out for her grandchildren, Sergio gets distracted by a karaoke video game.
  • Cranial Eruption: Bobby gets a red swelling on his head from being hit with a baseball.
  • Description Cut: Right after every horrible Imagine Spot Rosa has of Bobby and Ronnie Anne dying of starvation, boredom, etc., we see just the opposite: Bobby and Ronnie Anne are having a pleasant time of it at Arturo's apartment.
  • Full-Name Ultimatum: When Hector brings a broken-down arcade game and a "tablet" that is clearly a piece of cardboard with buttons drawn on it, Rosa is furious and cries out, "Hector Rodrigo Casagrande Gutiérrez!"
  • Imagine Spot: Rosa has three where Bobby and Ronnie Anne die or become skeletons at Arturo's apartment.
  • My Beloved Smother: She's technically their grandmother rather than their mother, but Rosa still counts in her over-protectiveness of Bobby and Ronnie Anne.
  • Only Sane Woman: Maria points out how ridiculous Rosa is being in believing that Bobby and Ronnie Anne join their father in Peru.
  • Rapid Aging: One of Rosa's Imagine Spots has Bobby and Ronnie Anne becoming old in seconds before becoming skeletons.
  • Running Gag: Rosa being so distracted in her worry she mixes Sergio up with her food.
  • Tap on the Head: Bobby got hit in the head with a baseball, and as a result, he becomes even ditzier than usual.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Sandwich: Rosa welcomes Bobby and Ronnie Anne with a huge pile of tacos, which she knocks over when they tell her they had the best time of at their dad's apartment.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: Due to her love of telenovelas, Rosa assumes that Bobby and Ronnie Anne will want to live with their father forever.

"Monster Cash" contains examples of:

  • Agent Scully: Ronnie Anne doesn't believe in ghosts and therefore does not fall for Carl's El Cucuy scam, unlike Adelaide, Bobby, or even Vito.
  • Cast as a Mask: El Cucuy (who is Rosa in disguise) is voiced by Eric Bauza instead of Sonia Manzano.
  • Comically Missing the Point: When Carl ditches Ronnie Anne for her skepticism, Vito simply complains that he was hungry.
  • Con Man: Carl's scam artist tactics are taken up to eleven in this episode.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: Rosa's warning about El Cucuy gives Carl the idea of setting up a tour around El Cucuy.
  • Get-Rich-Quick Scheme: Carl decides to make money off of people eager to learn about El Cucuy.
  • Prank Punishment: Carl runs a "haunted tour" scam in spite of his Abuela's warnings about a demon called "El Cucuy", who is said to eat rotten children. Later, Carl finds himself being haunted by El Cucuy, but it turns out to be Abuela scaring him into doing his chores and giving everyone their money back.
  • Real After All: Towards the end of the episode, Carl, Sergio, and Lalo meet El Cucuy, Carl having set up a scam tour about this monster. However, El Cucuy turns out to be Abuela Rosa in disguise.
