Recap / The Batman S 5 E 2 The Batman Superman Story Part 2

Go To

Batman and Robin must battle Superman, who is now under the mind control of Lex Luthor, as the villain plans to launch a wave of Lex Corps' robots and take over all of the world's armies.

Tropes for this episode include:

  • Asshole Victim: Mercy is left behind by Luthor, then tied up by Robin's batarangs, trips and slams her face into Poison Ivy's capsule. For good measure, Ivy taunts her as she slides down the glass by waving.
  • Badass Normal: Mercy took down all of Batman and Robin's attacks with just two pistols.
  • Big "WHAT?!": Luthor when his escape in one of the robots fails because of a virus in the system.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Superman while under the effects of the kryptonite dust.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Batman lied about giving the Kryptonite to Superman and he had the real one just in case Superman ever went violent.
  • Friendship Moment: Superman lets Batman keep the kryptonite, saying he knows it'd be with someone he knows he can trust.
  • Glass Smack and Slide: Mercy does this after Robin capturing her causes her to fall onto Ivy's containment unit.
  • Hope Spot: Batman uses the kryptonite to keep Superman at bay. Superman responds by using his super-breath to separate him from it.
  • Humongous Mecha: Luthor's trump card is a much bigger version of his robot soldiers that he can pilot. Thanks to Batman tagging it with a virus, it doesn't even get a decent shot in.
  • Logical Weakness: Batman is able to neutralise the plant spores controlling Superman using a herbicide.
  • Mission Control: According to Batman, there's always someone stationed aboard the Watchtower for monitor duty. He considers it boring, but at least with a great view out the window.
  • Not-So-Well-Intentioned Extremist: Lex Luthor's plan to ensure no one tries to take over the world is to take over the world himself.
  • Our Minotaurs Are Different: Clayface imitates a minotaur by conjuring bull horns on his head before charging at Batman.
  • Reduced to Dust: Batman uses an agent that turn Clayface into this. Batman says he'll be alright after giving him some water.
  • Robot Soldier: Lex plans to use the robots he built to take over the world.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Lex decides to escape using the Humongous Mecha, which results in him abandoning Mercy.
  • Self-Deprecation:
Superman: Tell me about this justice team of yours.
Batman: League. Justice League. I told the Martian it sounded like a ball club.
  • Shout-Out: Batman and Superman's fight references to The Dark Knight Returns.
  • Spanner in the Works: After Batman has neutralised Superman with the Kryptonite, a pair of teens find him and throw the Kryptonite away, under the impression he’s been incapacitated by a villain.
  • Talking Is a Free Action: Deconstructed. Luthor goes on at length about his plan before finally ordering Superman to just kill Batman. The moment Lex gives the order, though, a couple batrangs hit the device forcing the spores into Superman.
  • Team Spirit: Saved from mind control because of Batman and Robin, Superman acknowledges teamwork certainly has its advantages.
  • Understatement: Fleeing a mind-controlled Superman, Batman tells Robin that they have a problem.
  • Villain Has a Point: Luthor is right that Earth lacked the means and infrastructure to properly respond to the recent alien invasion, with everything hinging on a handful of superheroes.
