Recap / The Batman S 3 E 9 Cash For Toys

Go To

Because of him attempting to shut down his company due to his toy safety issues, Bruce Wayne ended up being a target for Cosmo Krank, the mastermind behind the dangerous toys. To protect him, he gets assigned Cash Tankinson — a cocky detective whose attention he'll have to divert to catch Krank without giving away his secret.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Accidental Misnaming: Alfred gets annoyed by Cash continually referring to him as "Freddy."
  • The Bus Came Back: Cash Tankinson, Detective Yin’s new partner for a short time, returns for this episode.
  • Chained Heat: Cash briefly handcuffs himself to Bruce after catching the latter sneaking out. He goes back on it in a few hours.
  • Continuity Nod: Bruce having a playboy reputation leads to Cash concluding that he snuck out to party without him.
  • Deadly Delivery: Krank attempts this, with the delivery-toy being the deadly thing, rather than carrying a bomb.
  • Death by Genre Savviness: Cash when a package arrives for Bruce confiscates it, expecting a bomb. The package is safe, but the delivery-toy is another story.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Bruce shut down Krank's company because his toys were too dangerous for children, so he should rethink his designs and learn from this, right? No, this apparently warrants the decision to send in weaponized toys to assassinate him, with Krank eventually settling for abducting Bruce so he can boil him alive in a river of molten plastic.
  • Ditch the Bodyguards: Bruce has to do this to go about his work as Batman.
  • Determinator: Cash may be incompetent but you gotta give the guy credit for being able to keep up with Krank's spinning top getaway on foot before commandeering an ice cream truck so he could 'save' a 'kidnapped' Bruce. Although he ends up getting in the way, the fact that he's the only one who managed to follow Krank to his hideout deserves a nod of recognition.
  • Dumbass Has a Point: Cash is rightfully upset when he realizes that Bruce sneaked out, and not knowing Bruce's alter-ego, naturally thinks it was irresponsible of Bruce to go out to "party" without his bodyguard. It's his job to keep Bruce safe, and while Cash is relatively incompetent, he would still be held liable.
  • Entertainingly Wrong: Cash, much to Bruce's relief, when he sneaks out to do Bat-things in the middle of the night.
Cash: Did you think you could pull the wool over Cash's eyes? I know exactly what's going on. (A tense moment passes. Cash picks a piece of Krank's confetti out of Bruce's hair) You were partying.
  • Everyone Has Standards: This is one of the few times that Bruce has stepped out of his playboy image to go after a company for hurting children.
  • It's Personal: Krank goes after Bruce for shutting down his toy company.
  • The Load: Cash at best manages to distract Krank after the latter kidnaps Bruce. He would be a fairly competent cop if not facing a supervillain.
  • Lost Toy Grievance: A child cries over his toy robot being destroyed by Cash when Cash mistakes the plaything for one of Cosmo Krank's toy minions.
  • Manchild: To say Cosmo Krank is an adult with an immature attitude would be an understatement.
  • Meaningful Name: Cosmo Krank is certainly not right in the head.
  • Never My Fault: Krank blames Bruce Wayne for ruining his company and shutting it down, not realizing that it was shut down because the toys he made were more than likely to hurt kids.
  • No Product Safety Standards: Its clear that Krank has none from the opening scene where it shows kids flying around on personal hoverboards without a single thing preventing them from falling off or any of them wearing so much as a helmet.
  • Oh, Crap!: Cash gets this moment when he realizes Krank anticipated him to get for his flying saucer just so he could bump him to a tree.
    Cash: Gotcha!
    Krank: Who's got who?
    Cash: Oh no.
  • Psychopathic Manchild: Krank is obviously as immature and unstable as they get, given his obsession with creating dangerous toys he sees as cool while disregarding safety measures to keep the toys from harming the children they're intended for.
  • Recurring Character: Cash, who was previously introduced as Detective Yin's partner.
  • Sleeping Dummy: Bruce does this to throw off Cash while he goes hunting for Krank.
  • Stealth Hi/Bye: Both Bruce and Batman do this during the episode.
  • Sure, Let's Go with That: Bruce says "You got me" when Cash accuses him of sneaking out to party. He can't explain that he was going out as Batman, for obvious reasons.
  • Third-Person Person: Cash.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: Alfred questions whether allowing Cash to drive is wise.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Krank's toys have put their target audience in danger, which is why Bruce got the company shut down. Krank doesn't seem to care about the safety hazards.
