Recap / The Americans S4E8 - The Magic of David Copperfield V

Go To

Martha is able to safely get on the plane Arkady and Tatiana arranged for her, and is able to land safely in Cuba, from where she'll fly to Prague and, eventually, to Moscow. However, Philip wants Gabriel to call Martha's parents about this sooner rather than later. Elizabeth and Philip still have tension between them. It comes out after Elizabeth goes to an EST meeting, and she and Philip get into an argument about Martha and other things that have been stewing between them. Elizabeth also snaps at Paige when she doesn't want to go see Pastor Tim anymore, telling Paige it's the only way to make sure their family stays safe. Even Gabriel sees the tension between them, and complains to Claudia about it. However, after Elizabeth meets up with Lisa and is forced to kill her when Lisa threatens to spill the beans, Gabriel sees how shaken both Elizabeth and Philip are about it, and decides they need a break, so he tells them to scale down their work schedule, only keeping up with Young-Hee and the bug at Kimmy's father's house. So, Elizabeth and Philip spend more time with Paige and Henry, though they make sure Paige also spends time with Pastor Tim and his family.

Elsewhere, Gaad is let go because of the fact Martha, his secretary, was married to a KGB agent, and Tatiana finds out her brother is being sent to fight in Afghanistan.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Arc Words: At the EST meeting Elizabeth goes to, the moderator mentions how people are trapped in a prison of their own making. It's become clear as the series goes on Elizabeth and Philip have been trapped in a prison of their own making, which is partly why Gabriel has them take a break.
  • Call-Back: When Gabriel tells Elizabeth and Philip they can take it easy, Elizabeth suggests to Philip they take Paige and Henry to see EPCOT.
    • When Elizabeth and Philip get into a bitter argument after she goes to the EST meeting, she reminds him of Gregory getting gunned down, as well as Philip lying about the fact he slept with Irina.
    • Gabriel tells Philip Misha is safely home from Afghanistan.
  • Character Death: Elizabeth kills Lisa after she insists on cutting a deal with the police to confess spying on Northrop
  • Continuity Nod: Sandra has apparently served Stan with divorce papers.
  • Foreshadowing: The connection between Oleg and Tatiana becomes more developed over the next few episodes.
    • Gaad tells Stan he's going on vacation with his wife in Thailand, which becomes important later in the season.
  • Hypocrite: When Gabriel complains to Claudia about Elizabeth and Philip, telling her they're whining like spoiled children, Claudia tells him he's essentially doing the same thing when complaining about them.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: Stan comes over to Philip's house looking for beer after getting served with divorce papers, and after what's been going on at work.
  • Mini-Golf Episode: Not an entire episode per se, but near the end, after the Time Skip (see below), we see Paige playing miniature golf with Pastor Tim and Alice.
  • Shout-Out: Elizabeth and Young-Hee go to see Tender Mercies, and then sneak in to see The Outsiders.
    • The complete title of the episode, "The Magic of David Copperfield V: The Statue of Liberty Disappears", refers to a stunt David Copperfield pulled, and Elizabeth, Philip, Paige and Henry all watch.
  • Stepford Smiler: Paige has become this when hanging around Pastor Tim and Alice.
  • Time Skip: Near the end (while we hear Roxy Music's "End of the Line" on the soundtrack), the episode skips ahead seven months.
