Recap / The Adventures Of Jimmy Neutron Boy Genius S 1 E 5

Go To

Jimmy and Cindy are partners for a science project, and Jimmy decides to take his crew on an undersea journey to find the missing treasure of the sunken Oozy Scab ship. However, troubles arise when Jimmy and Cindy disagree over who is the better captain.

"Raise the Oozy Scab" provides examples of:

  • An Aesop: Group projects are about everyone offering their input. Cindy's system of tracking the ocean drift proves to be effective in finding the treasure, while Jimmy's Gill Gab saves them from the giant squid. Sheen and Carl detain Jimmy to stop him from commandeering the project after he gets them lost in Japan.
  • Argument of Contradictions: One delivered by Jimmy and Cindy after getting lost.
Jimmy: Ms. Fowl may have made Cindy my lab partner, but it's still my ship!
Cindy: You just can't deal with the fact that my plans are better than yours!
    Jimmy: Is not!
    Cindy: Is so!
    Jimmy: Is not!
    Cindy: Is so!
    Jimmy: Is not! Is nooo-
Carl: STOP IT! STOP IT!!! CAN'T YOU SEE YOUR CONSTANT FIGHTING IS TEARING US ALL APART!!??!!
    (Beat)
Sheen: (laughs) That was cool, Carl! I really believed you for a second!
Carl: Hehe, thanks. I saw that on a soap opera once.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Carl's Fish Snack 'Ems turn out to be useful when the Neutronic Submersible is threatened by a giant squid, because it contains squid DNA which Jimmy uses on the GilGab to communicate with it.
  • Head Desk: Jimmy repeatedly bangs his head on the treasure chest after learning it's not what he expected.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: Sheen and Carl quip on this after the team gets lost in Japan.
Sheen: We can't be lost! We only have enough food for two days! And I'm not eating Carl!
Carl: Well I'm not eating you either! (Beat) Okay, maybe a bite.
(Sheen and Cindy both back away from Carl)
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Jimmy arrogantly commandeers the project and refuses to take help from anyone, even after landing them on another continent. He then proceeds to gloat when they end up needing his help, even though their lives are at risk. It turns out that the treasure is saltwater taffy, and Cindy gets the last laugh, gloating about how much time he wasted searching for the treasure. At least they get an A+.
  • Motor Mouth: The goldfish Jimmy talks to with the GillGab has quite a mouth on her.
Goldfish: So I says to him, you wanna know what I says to him?
    Jimmy: Um, ok.
Goldfish: I says, what’s this bronze scale doing on your dorsal fin?
    Jimmy: Wha-?
Goldfish: Uh-huh! Have you been seeing that angel fish again? (Sighs) And you know what he says? I don’t know what he says so I —
Jimmy: Okay, okay, tha- thanks a lot, bye, gotta go!! (shuts the GillGab off)
  • Non-Malicious Monster: Once Jimmy is able to communicate with the giant squid thanks to Carl's Fish Snack 'Ems containing squid DNA, the squid is actually friendly enough to hand over the treasure to the without complaint. It does laugh a bit at what it was about to do to them over the misunderstanding though.
Squid: That piece of rubbish? Why didn’t you say so? And to think that I was about to crush your heads and suck out your guts. Hahaha… Oh, dear.
  • No-Sell: When Cindy tries to talk to the giant squid with the GillGab, it has no effect on it because it only works on fish. Jimmy manages to communicate by using part of Carl's snack with squid DNA in it.
  • Speaks Fluent Animal: The GillGab 9000 allows people to talk to fish.
  • Worthless Treasure Twist: The sunken treasure of the Oozy Scab turns out to be salt water taffy. Though Ms. Fowl gives Jimmy and Cindy an A+, Jimmy is not that happy about it.

To help Carl with his nightmares, Jimmy invents the Dream Injector 5000 to enter his dream and see what is causing the problem. But Jimmy soon discovers Dream Carl is a boy genius like him and everything the dream world actually happens to him.

"I Dream of Jimmy" provides examples of:

  • Bizarre Dream Rationalization: Both parodied and inverted; Jimmy keeps trying in vain to convince Dream Carl that they're in a dream by pointing out all the strange things happening, such as talking llamas and people being able to pull their brains out of their ears. It takes seeing Jimmy kissing Dream Cindy for Dream Carl to realize he must be asleep, allowing Jimmy to escape.
  • Dream Episode: The episode revolves around Jimmy entering Carl's dream to help him get over his fear of a lima bean monster he is afraid of.
  • Faceplanting into Food: When Carl falls asleep the second time, he plops his face in a bowl of porridge.
  • Hunger Causes Lethargy: Subverted; Jimmy at first assumed Carl kept zonking out during his experiments because he's hungry, when really, he's too sleep-deprived from his nightmare.
  • "Not Wearing Pants" Dream: When the Dream Injector activates, the first scene of Carl's dream is of him outside the Retroville Mall in his underwear.
Dream Carl: OH, NO!! I'M IN MY UNDERWEAR AT THE MALL!!!
  • Running Gag: Someone says, "If this was a dream, could I do...THIS?", then pulls something out of their ear (Carl's brain and Hugh's tongue).
  • Sleep Deprivation: Carl keeps falling asleep during Jimmy's experiments due to having a nightmare about a lima bean monster.
  • Shout-Out: The episode title is a pun on the series I Dream of Jeannie; the music during the title card is a parody of the show's theme song.
