Recap / The Adventures Of Jimmy Neutron Boy Genius S 1 E 3 Brobot The Big Pinch

Go To

Feeling lonely all the time, Jimmy creates Brobot, a fun-loving robot who makes the perfect ideal little brother for him. But Brobot soon attracts attention from everyone in Retroville, and Jimmy soon realizes having a little brother is not as fun as he thought.

"Brobot" provides examples of:

  • Big "NO!": Jimmy screams one, coupled with Eat the Camera, when Brobot is revealed to have been dropped off at his house.
  • Disney Death: When Jimmy attempts to deactivate Brobot, he soon feels guilty when Brobot is against it, but a Single Tear manages to deactivate him anyway. Fortunately, he comes right back to life seconds afterward due to making him indestructible.
  • Hope Spot: In an attempt to get rid of Brobot, Jimmy invents a new game called "one way", in which he just takes a ticket and gives it to the bus driver before going "one way" on the bus. Brobot gets on the bus and rides off in it, but when Jimmy gets home, Brobot is suddenly here, the bus's destination happening to be the Neutron house and dropped Brobot off.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Jimmy says this after Brobot is deactivated and feels guilty.
Jimmy: Oh, no... Brobot... what have I done?!!
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Brobot suddenly drops his cheerfulness when he sees Jimmy is turning him off, alerting him that this means they can't play anymore and he will lose his big brother.
  • Robot Kid: Brobot, the robot Jimmy invents. He was designed to be a little brother, so he's obviously a robotic child.
  • Wanting Is Better Than Having: Jimmy comes to realize this when Brobot starts requesting multiple things and bothering him nonstop, prompting him to try and get rid of him.

To dissuade Cindy's story of Marconi, Jimmy brings Thomas Edison into the present day, and he winds up falling for Ms. Fowl. Things soon get worse when anything running on electricity disappears out of existence because he erased the inventor of electricity from history.

"The Big Pinch" provides examples of:

  • Artistic License – History: Several historical inaccuracies regarding Jimmy's issue throughout.
    • When Jimmy disputes Cindy's report, he doesn't mention one of the most glaring problems: she claims that Guglielmo Marconi invented the radio in 1870, when Marconi wasn't even born until 1874.
    • In reality, Thomas Edison had little to do with the invention of the radio, since Marconi based it on a device invented by Heinrich Hertz to prove the existence of radio waves. Moreover, the key component of Hertz's apparatus was an induction coil, which was invented in 1836 — over a decade before Thomas Edison was even born.
    • Edison dismissively refers to Henry Ford as "such a knucklehead". Historically, Edison had great respect for Ford's work, and the two were close friends.
    • Edison was married to his second wife in 1886. The episode makes no mention of this. Since there's no evidence that he was an adulterer, his affair with Ms. Fowl seems unlikely.
    • While Edison was and still is well known for his experimentation with and promotion of direct current, he didn't invent it. It was first developed in the early 19th Century and would gradually be further developed over time by a succession of experimenters and engineers. Furthermore, Edison was largely against alternating current, which was an important development in electric power.
    • One of the episode's central conceits — that Edison disappearing from the past would outright prevent many important inventions and advances — is deeply flawed. While Edison was an important figure in the proliferation of electric power and did invent (or at least improve upon) many things we take for granted, it's very doubtful that him somehow being removed from history would prevent the development and proliferation of modern electric power, or the invention of most electrical devices and machines.
  • Buffy Speak: Edison calls the rollerskates he and Ms. Fowl use "wheelie shoes".
  • Oh, Crap!: Jimmy's reaction when he sees the jukebox vanish, meaning Edison staying in the present too long is wiping out electricity everywhere.
  • Time Travel: Jimmy uses his time booth to bring Thomas Edison into his time.
