Recap / The 7 DS 2 E 6 B Jolleyball Anyone

Go To

Queen Delightful bets the Gnome King that if his team wins a game of Jolleyball, she'll have to forfeit the kingdom to him. So she recruits the 7D to play the game (which they stink at) and the famous Jolleyball coach, Coach Coachy.

This episode has the following tropes

  • Affectionate Nickname: Coach Coachy calls Bashful "Hats" throughout the episode.
  • And Your Reward Is Edible: What's the prize if Jollywood wins? A stick of Gnomeberry gum.
  • Athletically Challenged: The 7D to a degree.
  • Attack! Attack... Retreat! Retreat!: When meeting the gnomes at the Jolleyball game the first time:
    The 7D: (marching up) Hi-ho! Hi-ho! Hi-ho!
    Gnomes: (also marching up) Hut-yeah! Hut-yeah! Hut-yeah!
The 7D: (now backing away) Oh, no! Oh, no! Oh, no!
  • Baseball Episode: Well sort of. In Jolleyball, there is a segment where one has to kick the ball out into the field (which is similar to kickball), but no home runs are involved.
  • Big Game: Jolleyball, Jollywood vs Gnomes.
  • The Benchwarmer: Bashful willingly gets benched to avoid getting his ass kicked in the game. Considering what happened to him during training, you can't blame him.
  • The Bet: After getting fed up of hearing the Gnome King brag about how his kingdom always wins Jolleyball, she makes a bet that if he wins, she would have to hand over Jollywood to him.
    Grumpy: She has kooked it.
  • Brick Joke: The Gnomeberry bubblegum commercial.
  • Chekhov's Gag: Bashful's uncanny ability to teleport whenever no one is looking. That comes into play during the Jolleyball game.
  • Comically Missing the Point: During Jolleyball practice, Coach Coachy tells Bashful to steal the ball from him, which the latter refuses because "stealing is bad". Uh, Bashful? The whole point of playing any ball sport in general (including Jolleyball) is to take the ball from your opponent to ensure your team wins.
  • Department of Redundancy Department: Coach Coachy's name.
  • Dogpile Of Doom: The gnomes really like doing this when playing Jolleyball, and at some point during the game, the 7D do this to Starchbottom.
  • Down to the Last Play: When the 7D are starting to make a comeback against the Gnomes. All they have to do is face down a really burly-looking gnome. They managed to win.
  • Drench Celebration: When Coach Coachy asks for some water, Bashful dumps a bucket of water onto him. Later on, when Jollywood won the game, Bashful gets the receiving end of one.
  • Epic Fail: The 7D pounce on Lord Starchbottom during the Jolleyball game, despite the fact that he's on the same team.
  • Eye-Obscuring Hat: The cap that Coach Coachy wears covers his eyes.
  • Failure Montage: The Gnomes beating the 7D (and Lord Starchbottom) by six points.
  • Fictional Sport: Jolleyball is a combination of kickball, football and basketball. The player kicks the ball out into the field (kickball), once someone has the ball, they have to race over to the nets without getting tackled by the opposing team (football) and shoot the ball into the hoop (basketball).
  • "I Can't Look!" Gesture: Bashful hides inside a duffle bag to avoid watching his friends play Jolleyball. Subverted when he opens the bag since he can't miss the outcome either.
  • Laughing Mad: Queen Delightful does this when she bets her entire kingdom to the Gnome King knowing that they're going to lose anyway.
  • Mirthless Laughter: The 7D nervously laugh along with Queen Delightful, who is Laughing Mad.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: When Delightful is laughing like a madwoman, it's implied that she could be suffering through this because she bet her whole kingdom to the Gnome King because of the fact that she got so sick of his Unsportsmanlike Gloating about how his kingdom wins Jolleyball every year and because her Jolleyball team sucks at playing the titular sport and are very likely to lose.
  • Offscreen Teleportation: Other than hiding, Bashful is shown to utilize this trope in the episode. A crowning example would be him hiding inside his hat, then when Coach Coachy picks it up, the former is suddenly seen hiding behind the chalkboard.
    Coach Coachy: What the-? How-?
    Grumpy: That's his stunt hat.
  • Nails on a Chalkboard: Coach Coachy does this as his Establishing Character Moment, showing that he is a strict Jolleyball coach.
