Recap / The 7 DS 1 E 18 B Jollybells

Go To

As Jollywood celebrates Jolly Day, the Glooms have their own celebration of Gloomy Day. Hildy gets irritated at the merriment, so Grim gives Hildy a device that sucks the joy out of people and they use it on the 7D and the Jollywood townsfolk. Happy and Bashful realize what is going on and try to rally everyone around the Jollywood Tree to cheer them up.

This episode has the following tropes

  • And a Diet Coke: Inverted. Queen Delightful orders a grande low-fat cocoa with extra whipped cream.
  • Bad "Bad Acting": When Happy and Bashful were the next to get their joy taken by the Glooms, they trick them by using mannequins. It's just that when the Glooms suck out the mannequins' joy, the way they sound doesn't seem convincing to the audience, but it does fool the Glooms.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: Happy greets the audience to have a Happy Jolly Day at the end of the episode.
  • Call-Back: This is the second time Hildy felt some good in her (which she disliked).
  • Color Motif: Anyone who gets their joy sucked away turns into a pale blue colour.
  • Didn't Think This Through: The Glooms decide to suck away everyone's joy not knowing how much joy each person has.
  • Died in Your Arms Tonight: Non-death example. Bashful is briefly seen holding a joyless and unconscious Happy.
  • Dwindling Party: Non-death example. The Glooms pick off the Joliwoodians' (including most of the 7D and Queen Delightful) from their joy.
  • Easily Forgiven: Happy easily forgives the Glooms for their attempt to ruin Jolly Day and even asks them to join in the Jolly Day festivities.
  • Evil Is Petty: The Glooms decide to suck away everyone's joy because Jolly Day and Gloomy Day fall under the same day.
  • Failed a Spot Check: The Glooms don't notice that they didn't really get Bashful and Happy's joy. Here are things they don't notice:
    • The dummies that Happy and Bashful use don't look exactly like themselves.
    • After the Glooms get the dummies' joy, they don't turn blue like everyone else.
    • Happy's dummy head snaps off after the Glooms suck out their joy.
  • Gift-Giving Gaffe: Hildy gives Grim one of the couch cushions as a last-minute present.
  • Happiness Is Mandatory: Subverted. The point of Jolly Day is that everyone is happy.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Happy jumps in front of Bashful and gets his joy sucked out to save the latter from ending up as a sad Empty Shell.
  • Ironic Echo Cut:
Happy: (singing) ♫ Oh I love Jolly Day! ♫
(Scene cuts to the Glooms residence)
Hildy: Oh, Grim! I so adore Gloomy Day!
  • Literal Metaphor: Lord Starchbottom claims that he's drained after the Glooms drain him of his joy.
  • Musical Episode: Five songs were featured in this episode.
  • Noodle Incident: Happy mentions a gloomy holiday called "Down-in-the-Dumps Day", which is set in August.
  • Off with His Head!: Happy's dummy head snaps off, probably for a comedic effect.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • When Grim tells Hildy that Jolly Day is taking place on Gloomy Day.
    • When Bashful realizes he and Happy are the only ones who have joy and are about to have it sucked away from them.
  • "Psycho" Strings: They're heard playing when Hildy Jolly Day and Gloomy Day fall under the same day.
  • Red/Green Contrast: Like its previous episode, everyone in Jollywood wears red, green or a combination of both, for the occasion of Jolly Day.
  • Rule of Three: The camera zooms in on Hildy three times when she learns that Jolly Day and Gloomy Day fall under the same day.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Most of the Jolliwoodians decide to leave because of the fact that they're gloomy.
  • Taking the Bullet:
    • Unintentional. When Sneezy was catching the flying cookies, he jumps up high enough to prevent Happy from getting his joy taken.
    • Happy jumps in front of Bashful to save him from getting his joy taken away and as a result, have his joy taken in the process. Doubles as a Heroic Sacrifice.
  • Thing-O-Matic: The Joybuster machine.
  • Visual Pun: The Glooms made everyone feel blue.
  • Worst. Whatever. Ever!: A variation of it. Starchy says that this is the saddest Jolly Day he's ever seen.
  • You Mean "Xmas": Like its previous episode, Jolliwoodians celebrate a Christmas-like holiday called "Jolly Day", which seems to happen around the same time as Christmas.
