Echo and Gabriel learn more about Hope and her mysterious past.

Tropes:

  • Armor-Piercing Response: After sabotaging Octavia's newest attempt at reaching the Anomaly, Diyoza asks her why she wants to leave so badly considering her strained relationship with Bellamy. Octavia bursts into tears and answers that she just wants him to know that because of Hope, she understands the things he did for her now.
  • Broken Tears: Octavia sobs as Diyoza destroys her last chance of reaching the Anomaly and, therefore, Bellamy.
  • Call-Back: Octavia hides Hope from the Disciples, the same way Bellamy used to hide her from the Ark Guard.
  • Character Development: Spending ten years being an Honorary Aunt/big sister figure to Hope ever since her birth causes Octavia to realize what exactly it meant for Bellamy to do things for her.
  • Determinator: Octavia spends ten years on Skyring trying to swim to the Anomaly at the bottom of the lake, initially because she doesn't want to be stuck there, and eventually, because she wants Bellamy to know she understands him now. Diyoza crushing her Hope Spot leads to Octavia giving up and she instead resorts to trying to send a letter to Bellamy through the Anomaly while she accepts her life with Hope and Diyoza.
  • Dramatic Irony: Diyoza wants Octavia to stay on Skyring since, if she dies, she will be all Hope has left and she doesn't want her daughter to live on the planet alone. Octavia only gets to stay on the planet for ten years before the Disciples come and kidnap her and Diyoza meaning Hope seemingly spend more then ten years stuck on the planet by herself anyway.
  • Flashback B-Plot: This episode shows what happens to Hope, Echo, and Gabriel immediately after entering the Anomaly in the previous episode, as well as showing flashbacks to Hope's childhood and the 10 years she spent with Octavia and her mother before both were captured by an unknown enemy.
  • Heel Realization: When Diyoza asks Octavia why she wants to leave so badly, Octavia reveals she wants to go back to Bellamy so that she can tell him that because of Hope, she understands why he acted the way he did to her. After she gives up on leaving, Octavia instead tries writing a letter to Bellamy about this.
  • Honorary Aunt: Octavia becomes this to Hope with the girl calling her "Auntie O".
  • Hope Spot: Octavia has one when a corpse of a man in technologically advanced suit might help her reach the Anomaly at the bottom of the lake... and then Diyoza destroys it to prevent her from leaving.
  • Mama Bear: As expected, Diyoza is incredibly protective of Hope. So is Octavia.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Octavia, having resigned herself to never leaving Skyring, sends a message in a bottle to Bellamy hoping that it will reach him so she can tell him that she is okay. Instead the message is picked up by the Disciples who land in Skyring and capture her and Diyoza leaving Hope all alone.
  • Screaming Birth: Diyoza yells while delivering Hope; understandably, given she is initially on her own in the middle of nowhere giving birth without any medical attention until Octavia arrives.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Diyoza gives one to Octavia for her constant efforts to return back to Sanctum by pointing out that, thanks to the time dilation of the Anomaly, she and Hope will be long dead if and when she ever tries to return.
  • When She Smiles: While Octavia smiled a lot in the first episodes of the show, after becoming Darker and Edgier as a Grounder warrior and then a Broken Bird after Lincoln's death, those smiles all but disappeared, so seeing her smile multiple times in this episode is a real gift.
  • Year Inside, Hour Outside: It's revealed that those that enter the Anomaly suffer a form of time dilation that effects the planets differently. Despite Octavia being only a few seconds behind Diyoza when she went through the portal it's revealed that she ended up on Skyring a full three months later then her. It's also revealed that Octavia spent ten years on Skyring before she was sent back to Sanctum. According to a recording left behind by Becca this is because the Eligius planets are in close proximity to black holes which causes time to slow down relative to the rest of the universe and that Planet Beta, aka Skyring, is too far from said holes meaning hundreds of years can pass there while little time can pass on planets like Sanctum.
