Recap / Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1987) S07E27 "Shredder Triumphant"

Go To

The ending of an Era in this Season 7 Finale, being the last episode before the show's Retool into the "Red Sky" episodes, as well as the last to use the original theme song.

Shredder, Bebop and Rocksteady arrive at the Asian Art Exhibit and proceed to loot it. The Turtles head out to stop them, despite a grave warning from Splinter that there will be dire consequences if they try to stop the Villains. Arriving at the Exhibit, the Turtles take care of Shredder and his aides quite easily. Then they discover they were set up. Whilst Shredder was keeping the Turtles occupied with a faux heist at the art exhibit, Krang and the Foot Soldiers had pulled a raid of their own, stealing precious negererative power cells from the Space Administration centre. Krang used the cells to empower the Technodrome, and the machine emerges from the sea to terrorize the city, and the world.

Tropes

  • Batman Gambit: The Turtles manage to get back to Earth by goading Shredder over the fact that he didn't beat them in a fight, knowing that his ego would get the better of him, resulting in him opening the portal to let them through.
  • Big Damn Heroes:
    • Weesel saves the Turtles and his baby brother from being eaten by the Great Chaarg.
    • Splinter shows up just in time to stop Bebop and Rocksteady from pushing the Channel 6 crew out a window.
  • Big "NO!": Krang lets out one when Donatello sends the Technodrome through the portal, leaving the villains stranded on Earth.
  • Cast as a Mask: Somehow, when Donatello used the Technodrome's holographic cloaker to have Michaelangelo impersonate Krang, he also managed to sound like Krang, which allowed him to order all the Rock Warriors back into the Technodrome.
  • End of an Era: This is the final episode for many things, including, but not limited to:
    • This is the final episode with the standard blue sky.
    • This is final episode to use the original theme song.
    • Many of the music cues from earlier seasons make their last appearance here.
    • This is the last time the Turtles and some of the other characters have their original designs.
    • Krang is seen in his android body for the last time. After this, he is always seen in his bubble walker instead.
    • This is the last full episode with the original Channel 6 building, as it is blown up during the following episode.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Weesel has no problem sending the Turtles to Vorx's slave camp, but he's outraged to find the boss has also conscripted his baby brother. He ultimately pulls a rescue.
Weesel: I couldn't let you rot in those pits.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Donatello ends up using Krang's own holographic cloaker to foil the villains by having Michaelangelo impersonate Krang and order all the Rock Warriors to return to the Technodrome.
  • Near-Villain Victory: As the episode title implies, this is the closest Shredder has come to victory, with the Turtles trapped in Dimension X, the city invaded by Rock Warriors, and Shredder and Krang on the verge of conquering Earth and Dimension X respectfully.
  • Punch-Clock Villain: Weesel initially sees selling people to Vorx as just a paycheck to put food on the table for himself and his brother. Said brother being made a slave causes him realize the error of his ways.
  • Season Finale
  • Self-Deprecation:
    • While infiltrating the fully powered Technodrome, the Turtles make light of how this has been a standard crisis going back to Season 1.
    • On the prospect of Bebop and Rocksteady having their own show, Irma bemoans the state of TV programming.
  • Slavery Is a Special Kind of Evil: The Turtles denounce Weesel for being in the business of selling people into slavery.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: Raphael over Vorx introducing them to the Great Chaarg.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: At the end of the episode, when the Turtles leave him in a humiliated position, Shredder says this:
Shredder: No Technodrome. No Rock Warriors. No Foot Soldiers?! I'll pay those turtles back for this if it's the last thing I ever do!
  • Villain: Exit, Stage Left: After the Technodrome is banished to Dimension X, Shredder and Krang are forced to beat a retreat in the back of a pickup truck driven by Bebop.
  • We Will Meet Again: Even though the villains no longer have the Technodrome, Splinter figures that since they still have Shredder's cunning, Krang's intellect, and the strength of Bebop and Rocksteady, they will eventually return.
  • Wham Episode: The Technodrome is returned to Dimension X again, this time without Shredder and Krang, leaving them without their resources.
