Recap / Tangled: The Series S2E17 "Mirror, Mirror"

Go To

The gang are caught in the rain and stuck in the middle of the road, but happen to come across a strange residence. Rapunzel decides to stay there until the storm passes. They meet Matthews, a strange old man offering them room and board. It looks inviting, but it also holds an ominous mirror...

This episode provides examples of:

  • Cabin Fever: Everyone is getting on everyone else's nerves due to being cooped up in the caravan because of the rain.
  • Dwindling Party: Everyone gets replaced by evil mirror doubles until only Rapunzel and Pascal are left.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: When Rapunzel, Eugene, and Cassandra (the latter of two actually being mirror clones still maintaining their act) are testing Pascal on whether or not he's a mirror clone by making him change to various colors and patterns, "Eugene" suggests the color Lance turned when bitten by the venomous spider in "Beyond The Corona Walls". The other captured mirror clones are watching, and Lance's admits that, despite not being the real Lance, he still finds that messed up.
  • Evil Doppelgänger: The mirror clones.
  • Foreshadowing: The fact we know Eugene can't help but admire himself in a mirror hints that he will be its first victim.
  • Impostor-Exposing Test: When Rapunzel and Eugene capture the mirror versions of Lance and Shorty, Rapunzel suggests doing this to root out any possible imposters among them. Rapunzel, Pascal, and Eugene pass, but Cassandra is revealed to be a doppelgänger and frees the others. And Eugene is revealed to also be one when Rapunzel notices he calls Pascal "chameleon" instead of "frog". The imposter passed the test earlier because he swiped her diary earlier to know how Eugene acts, but is unable to reproduce Eugene's "smoulder".
  • Mirror Universe: Where everyone else gets pulled into when their doppelgängers pull them through the mirror to replace them in the real world.
  • Not Hyperbole: We have been told several times by Eugene that his "Smoulder" can make any woman fall for him, only for it to not work for one reason or another. However when he is able to use it uninterrupted on Mirror Rapunzel, she falls into a love daze.
  • Out-of-Character Alert:
    • Rapunzel notices something is off with Shorty when he is actually being polite at dinner and actually has table manners.
    • Rapunzel notices Eugene is an impostor when he doesn't mistake Pascal for a frog like the real Eugene does.
    • When in the mirror, the others realize their Rapunzel isn't the real one when she calls their situation "the pits".
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: The mirror clones have these when they get aggressive.
  • Tomato in the Mirror: Or rather, doppelganger in the mirror. Rapunzel (and the audience) are lead to believe it was Shorty who was first claimed by the mirror. As Mirror!Eugene later reveals, it was Eugene who was first claimed, meaning there was a spy among our heroes.
  • Wham Shot: The tree that falls in front of the caravan causing it to stop in the first place is revealed to have been chopped down intentionally.
