Recap / Tangled: The Series S2E07 "Keeper of the Spire"

Go To

Rapunzel travels to an ancient museum to acquire a piece of the scroll.

Tropes in this episode:

  • The Determinator: Calliope's one redeeming quality is that she keeps learning what she can and keeps on going, even if she has no idea what she's doing. As it turns out, this is what all past Keepers of the Spire are specifically tested for. And the current Keeper reveals that her determination to keep practicing her magic tricks in public despite never having an audience is the sole reason why he chose her.
  • Dull Eyes of Unhappiness: Cass gives this expression when Calliope does a Look Behind You gag on her, clearly expressing this was her Last Straw with her, scaring both Eugene, Lance and Rapunzel. Without changing her expression, Cass makes her way over to Calliope only to be stopped and dragged away by Eugene and Rapunzel before she would have most likely killed her.
  • Even the Loving Hero Has Hated Ones: It's telling how annoying Calliope is when even Rapunzel is barely keeping her temper in control while around her.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Even Rapunzel has her limits, and Calliope reaches them very quickly with her It's All About Me/Know-Nothing Know-It-All/Motor Mouth/Millstone personality.
  • It's All About Me: When Lance creates an opening to escape the cave, Calliope takes credit for it despite clearly having done nothing.
  • Know-Nothing Know-It-All: Part of what Calliope so insufferable is her bad habit of flaunting her so-called expertise in everybody's faces even she clearly has no clue what she's doing. What makes it worse is that she is usually wrong and acts as though she does not hear it when someone points this out.
  • Never My Fault: While Rapunzel is hacking at the bramble during their hike up the mountain with Cassandra's sword, Calliope claims she is doing it wrong and takes the sword, only to accidentally throw it off the mountain. She is then quick to blame Rapunzel's supposed palm sweat for it.
    Calliope: Way to go, Rapunzel.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business:
    • While narrating about her former life as a circus performer, Calliope describes that hundreds of people used to watch her performances. But very quickly, she soberly admits she wasn't as talented or as accomplished as she claimed, giving a sense even she can't pretend life before she met the spire's keeper was glamorous.
    • Eugene is a bit creeped out to see even Friend to All Living Things Rapunzel is getting annoyed with Calliope.
  • Secret Test of Character: The Keeper left Calliope to see if she was worthy to take his place as the spire's keeper, gauging her perseverance.
  • Shout-Out: The Spire contains numerous artifacts from other Disney properties, including the spinning wheel from Sleeping Beauty, the Sword in the Stone, Mickey's hat and one of the enchanted brooms from The Sorcerer's Apprentice, the Black Cauldron, and the heart box from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
  • Twitchy Eye: Rapunzel gets this as she desperately tries to maintain her upbeat attitude in the face of just how annoying Calliope is. This is especially seen when they have endure hours of poorly done magic tricks in order to seemingly be given the scroll... only to have night (and rain) fall, get kicked out the building and told they have to wait the next day to get the scroll from the top of the mountain.
  • You Say Tomato: Rapunzel and Calliope get in an argument over the pronunciation of "spire", yet clearly the difference is just the most minuscule of pauses. Cass eventually snaps and just about kills Calliope when she keeps correcting Rapunzel one too many times about it.
