In order to prove to Maya that she’s not “superficial,” Penny decided to join Maya at a protest.

Tropes

  • Accidental Discovery: Oscar doesn't realize his new product (which failed as usual) would theoretically make a good laxative for kids.
  • Adults Dressed as Children: The Gross Sisters manage a rapper named Lil' Toddler, who dresses in a diaper.
  • Agony of the Feet: After Oscar jokes that she was alive during the Crusades, Suga Mama stabs him in the foot with her cane, causing the toes to pop out of his shoe.
  • Ascended to Carnivorism: The talking panda reveals that bamboo is causing pandas to go extinct, and so he now eats meat.
  • Call-Back: In the episode "The Party" from the original series, the Gross Sisters were revealed to be talented singers. In this episode, Nubia says she and her sisters have decided to become rappers, and they're showed to be similarly skilled at it.
  • Company Cross References: When Suga Mama sees Penny in the suit of armor Oscar puts her in, she says Penny looks like Darth Vader.
  • Continuity Nod: Just like the original series' first episode, Penny couldn't get along with the new girl in town at first (LaCienega in the former, Maya in the latter). However, while Penny had to save LaCienega in the former and happily accepted her as part of her group, she tried to force Maya to like her in the latter.
  • Disney Acid Sequence: The Panda is surrounded by colorful visuals during his singing, which neither Penny nor Maya can see.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: Penny reads Sticky's letter out loud explaining he chose to go to Japan with his dad to finally get away from Dijonay, but Penny has to hastily stop and only reads out "Dijon" before crumpling the letter since Dijonay's right there. Dijonay now thinks a girl named "Dijon" drove Sticky away.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Penny knows the difference between sacrifice for a just cause and self-aggrandizement. Maya tries to present herself as always being right, and refused to accept Shuggie was living a comfortable life. Additionally, Maya was willing to go as far as committing what amounts to a federal crime, and Penny wasn't willing to risk prosecution.
  • Historical Longevity Joke:
Suga Mama: Why is my grandbaby dressed like Darth Vader?
Oscar: To keep the boys away like you did during the Crusades!
  • Like Mother, Like Daughter: Even Oscar can notice it by the way Penny asserted herself to get him to listen. As we've seen throughout the series, Trudy definitely showed that same level of vigor when dealing with Oscar’s stubbornness.
  • Offscreen Teleportation: Penny and friends walk past the Gross sisters, only for them to reappear further up the hill.
  • Put on the Bus: Sticky Webbnote  is only seen for a couple of seconds before he and his family drive away. According to the letter that Penny reads, Sticky and his family are moving all the way to Japan because his dad's new job is located there—while Sticky was given the option to stay with his cousins (who still live in town), Sticky chose to go to Japan as well primarily to (finally) get away from Dijonay.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Penny delivers one to Maya, saying that she's just as superficial as Maya claimed her to be, calling her out on being stuck on herself when the talking panda did not want to be rescued, especially when sneaking into a closed zoo.
Penny: You know what? You’re right. I am lame, inconsequential, superficial, and a fool. Because I was willing to do anything to be your friend. I don’t know if seeing the light the other night confused me, but as of right now, I am officially no longer confused. You’re the superficial one. Not to mention pushy, delusional, and hard-headed. The bear just told you he’s happy, but you won’t hear it. Well I did, and I am not kidnapping a bear. That’s federal time. And I’m through letting you kidnap me. I’m out!
    Maya: Where are you going?
Penny: To hang out with my "squad." They may not be all that to you, but at least they appreciate me for being me.
  • She Is All Grown Up: Penny and all her friends grow up overnight, with Penny bragging that she is now a woman. Oscar has a hard time accepting this and keeps Penny from attracting the attention of boys.
  • Shout-Out: The Title is reference to the band.
  • Shown Their Work: Shugi’s assertion about Pandas eating habits is correct. Pandas are technically carnivores and their all bamboo diet doesn’t really give them all the nutrients they need.
  • Stealth Pun: The panda Penny and Maya try to rescue is named Shuggie, who entertains the girls with a rendition of "Strawberry Letter 23," a song written by Shuggie Otis.
  • Somebody Doesn't Love Raymond: The conflict of the episode is that Maya does not like Penny, and Penny tries to change that.
  • Take That!:
    • Wizard Kelly's campaign for mayor involves offering stimulus checks if he wins, something that should be very familiar at least to any adults in the US watching this show. Oscar immediately declares he hates the guy.
    • Later, while Penny is changing into her first outfit at the Army/Navy store, the newspaper Oscar's holding has the headline "Where is the economy?"
  • Talking Animal: The panda is one of the only animals who can talk with no explanation whatsoever, and Penny isn't even using her ability to communicate with animals.
  • Tear Off Your Face: LaCienega is the unfortunate recipient of this when Michael tries waxing off her facial hair with a full-face wax strip.
