Tropes

  • Ambition Is Evil: Anael was a nobody in Heaven, and has always wanted to move upwards and implement her own ideas on how things should be run. To the point she's willing to work with Lucifer to achieve them.
  • Ascended Meme: In a wink at the fandom's comparison of Asmodeus to Colonel Sanders, the Prince of Hell accosts Donatello while he's bringing fried chicken to the MOL bunker.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Anael appears to be the kind-hearted Sister Jo to humans, and an innocent victim to Team Free Will. She's not either.
  • Continuity Nod: The stage in the hall where Anael meets Lucifer looks suspiciously like it might be set up to stage "Supernatural: The Musical"
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Lucifer feeding off of Anael's grace is treated as a sexual metaphor, complete with them falling onto the bed exhausted afterwards and engaging in pillow talk.
  • Enemy Mine: Ketch offers to feed the Winchesters information from Asmodeus side in order to track down Lucifer and prevent Michael's invasion. Reluctantly, they agree... and plan to kill him afterwards.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Ketch points out that even he has a line he won't cross, and that's allowing Lucifer to roam free.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: In Heaven, Anael was a low-level functionary. After the Fall, she's gained recognition and power among humans as Sister Jo, and now she's serving as The Dragon to Lucifer.
  • Genius Bonus: Gabriel had his lips sewn shut, just like Loki, the Norse God he impersonated for millennia.
  • Incest Subtext: Happens between Lucifer and Anael, who would be considered siblings but whose interactions are loaded with sexual subtext.
  • Internal Reveal: Sam and Dean find out about Castiel having been imprisoned by Asmodeus, Lucifer being back from Apocalypse World, and Apocalypse!Michael's plans to invade the main universe.
  • Kneel Before Zod: Lucifer demands that he be appointed undisputed ruler of Heaven in exchange for creating new angels and giving the old ones their wings back. They concede.
  • Manchurian Agent: Asmodeus brainwashes Donatello to act as his mole.
  • Manipulative Bitch: Anael fits this to a T, from taking advantage of a woman desperate to save her husband by taking her as a vessel to her Wounded Gazelle Gambit with Team Free Will.
  • Mouth Stitched Shut: Gabriel had this inflicted upon him.
  • One-Steve Limit: Anael's name is quite similar to her fellow angel predecessors, Anna and Hannah. Chuck was apparently not very creative in naming his daughters.
  • Punk in the Trunk: Castiel knocks Ketch out and the boys lock him in Baby's trunk. He still manages to get out.
  • Shout-Out: Seated on Heaven's throne, Lucifer says "Hail to the king, baby."
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Anael's job was to push a button in Heaven, but thinks she knows how Heaven should be run despite her lack of knowledge or experience.
  • Wham Episode: Lucifer rules Heaven and slowly replenishing his Grace, with Anael at his side. Ketch makes a deal with Team Free Will to spy on Asmodeus for them. Asmodeus brainwashes Donatello, is revealed to have the Archangel Blade in his possession, which can kill Archangels, and has captured Gabriel, who is somehow alive after his confrontation with Lucifer.
  • Wham Shot: Gabriel, alive and imprisoned by Asmodeus.
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: Anael pretends to be a Damsel in Distress in order to draw Dean, Sam, and Castiel to her.
