Recap / Super Mario World Episode 9 Gopher Bash

Go To

Original airdate: November 9, 1991

Luigi teaches the cave people how to farm only for their harvest to be stolen by Cheatsy and his Monty Moles.

Tropes:

  • Added Alliterative Appeal: About a third of the episode's dialogue.
    • "Cave carrots! Stone squash! Pebble peas!"
    • "Let’s show those plumbers how much pull we have, boys!"
    • "Someone pilfered the produce!"
    • "Listen to me, you pathetic peabrained problem producing plumbers!"
    • "And no creepy Koopa is going to louse up Luigi!"
    • "Good work, buck-toothed battalion!"
    • "Okay, Luigi, lighten your load!"
    • "We're bringing home the bacon!"
  • Ate It All: Yoshi eats the entire sack of cave crops he helped Mario and Luigi rescue which were meant for the cave people.
  • Conjoined Eyes: Yoshi gets these in one scene due to an animation error.
  • Epic Fail: Luigi instructs the cave people to plant things. One caveman buries another caveman, a cavewoman puts dirt around a tree, a third caveman digs a hole and shakes another tree so that apples can fall into it.
  • "Everybody Laughs" Ending: In the final scene, the Mario Bros. and Princess Toadstool laugh at Yoshi after he burps.
  • The Famine: King Koopa's ultimate goal in this episode is to rob the cave people of their crops so they'll end up starving, and have to pledge loyalty to him in order to get any food.
  • Glad I Thought of It: When King Koopa and Cheatsy discover Luigi is teaching the cave people how to farm.
King Koopa: If those cave cretins succeed in growing their own food, I'll never be able to subjugate them.
Cheatsy: Unless, o regent reptile of repulsiveness, we stole all the crops!
King Koopa: We can start a famine! The cave people will have to come to me for food! It's brilliant! Glad I thought of it.
  • Inflating Body Gag: Mario helps Luigi and Yoshi down to Cheatsy's lair safely by popping a P-Balloon.
  • Never Say "Die": Averted when Luigi discovers Piranha Plants on the field.
Luigi: Mario, I've heard of weed killers, but killer weeds?
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: The Mario Bros. succeed in rescuing the crops from Cheatsy but Yoshi eats the entire sack, meaning the cave people are still without food.
  • Sarcasm-Blind: A Monty Mole gets stuck while trying to save a Piranha Plant from getting eaten by Yoshi. Cheatsy sarcastically commands the other Monty Moles with "Don't just help him! Stand there!" The other Monty Moles end up doing just that before Cheatsy clarifies what he meant: "Get, him out! NOW!"
  • Scooby Stack: Mario, Luigi and Yoshi do this before finding Cheatsy with the stolen crops.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: The Marios successfully reclaim the cave crops, only for Yoshi to eat them all on the way back.
Luigi: Yoshi! Oh no! We have to plant everything all over again!
  • Temporary Bulk Change: Yoshi bloats up after pigging out on the cave crops near the end and stays that way for the remainder of the episode.
  • Title Drop: "It's time for our Gopher Bash!"
  • Villain Song: "The Cheatsy's Life", sung by Cheatsy as Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi round up the Monty Moles. The heroes sing the last few lines.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Yoshi before being washed away thanks to the cave people breaking a well.
Yoshi: Grubba du dubba! I hate water!
  • Wild Take: Cheatsy when he sees the Mario Bros. and Yoshi reclaiming the cave crops.
