Give Jellyfish Fields a Chance

Original air date: 4/22/2010 (produced in 2009)

When a new superhighway is being planned to go straight through Jellyfish Fields, SpongeBob launches a crusade against the construction company responsible in order to save his favorite hangout.

Spongebob's Last Stand contains examples of:

  • Accidental Misnaming: SpongeBob refers to Sandy as "Sandy Squirrel" even though we all know that her last name is actually Cheeks.
  • Artistic License – Law: Mr. Krabs doesn't think to sue the pants off of Plankton for building the superhighway over the Krusty Krab in a way that was clearly designed to sabotage his business.
  • Big "NO!":
    • When Plankton gets attacked by the jellyfish, he screams, "NOOOO! Not the eye! Not the eye!"
    • When SpongeBob infiltrates the news and asks the Bikini Bottomites to help him save Jellyfish Fields, the fish scream this to him in unison; he then asks if they're kidding, to which they respond with a Big "YES!" and promptly come to his aid.
  • Comically Missing the Point: When the Bikini Bottomites boo SpongeBob and Patrick's song, SpongeBob thinks that they are booing the Shelly Superhighway.
    • Then when a Bikini Bottomite grabs Patrick's tambourine and stomps on it, SpongeBob misinterprets it as a hatred of tambourines.
  • Community-Threatening Construction: The Shelly Superhighway goes straight through Jellyfish Fields, over the Krusty Krab and straight to the Chum Bucket. However, everyone (save for SpongeBob, Patrick and Mr. Krabs) supports Plankton's plan.
  • Darkest Hour: Plankton successfully builds the Shelly Superhighway over Jellyfish Fields, resulting in him taking customers away from the Krusty Krab, and Mr. Krabs decides he could no longer stay in business and is ready to sell off the Krabby Patty Secret Formula.
Mr. Krabs: Plankton, I'm ready to negotiate a price for me secret formula.
Plankton: Oh, sure! Let me just wind my watch!
    Mr. Krabs: What for?
Plankton: 'Cause I'm gonna love every minute of this!
  • Didn't Think This Through: Mr. Krabs was all for the superhighway...until he learned that the highway would go over the Krusty Krab and put it out of business.
  • Earth Day Episode: The episode had even aired on Earth Day.
  • Earth Song: SpongeBob and Patrick sing a protest song defending Jellyfish Fields from the impeding superhighway construction, but the connection to the environment is a bit flimsy in practice, since it's mostly done as a nonsensical List Song and doesn't really win anybody over. It's also a parody of John Lennon's "Give Peace a Chance" and ends with the duo dressed as hippies.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Squidward hates his job, but even he shows concern about the Krusty Krab getting destroyed.
  • Green Aesop: Take care of the ecosystem and don't disturb animals' natural habitats.
  • Gross-Up Close-Up: Gary's toes and Patrick's armpit hair in the "Give Jellyfish Fields a Chance" sequence.
  • I Love the Smell of X in the Morning: Right as Plankton is about to pave Jellyfish Fields, he says, "I love the smell of tar in the morning."
  • I Warned You: SpongeBob continuously tries to tell everyone that if Jellyfish Fields is demolished, the jellyfish will have no place to live, but nobody listens to him. His concerns end up being verified when the jellyfish come into town.
  • The Last Title: The episode title itself.
  • List Song: "Give Jellyfish Fields a Chance" lists several objects in rhyming couplets that don't have anything to do with SpongeBob and Patrick's mission.
  • Literal-Minded: After Mr. Krabs decides they're gonna give Plankton a piece of his mind, SpongeBob tears off a large piece of his head.
  • Look Ma, I Am on TV!: One Bikini Bottomite overdoes it while the news reporter is not amused.
Bill: Hi Mom! Hi, Dad! Hey, Dr. Slieen! [SpongeBob is seen running away from jellyfish in the background] Hey, Jennifer! Hey, Sally! Hey, Francis! Hey, Mable! Hey, Julie! Hey, Abigail!
  • Malicious Misnaming: Plankton calls SpongeBob "SpongeDope" when he sees him trying to tear down the Shelly Superhighway.
  • Mistaken Confession: When SpongeBob and Mr. Krabs confront Plankton about the highway, he confesses that he's been stealing Mr. Krabs' mail for the past five years. Mr. Krabs was visibly shocked.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Mr. Krabs does this when he realizes that he was one of the people who voted of the superhighway to be built.
  • Near-Villain Victory: Plankton has successfully run the Krusty Krab out of business and is on the verge of getting the Krabby Patty secret formula from a willing Mr. Krabs.
  • Running Gag: Patrick misunderstanding SpongeBob's questions and answering something that SpongeBob already knows.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The song "Give Jellyfish Fields A Chance" is a parody of John Lennon's "Give Peace A Chance". The scene that the song plays over is a parody of the music video for "Subterranean Homesick Blues".
    • The middle of the jellyfishing song has a slight rewrite of The Toyes' "Smoke Two Joints" (replace "two joints" with "jellyfishing").
    • The line "Frankly, my dear sponge, I don't give a barnacle" is a parody of the line from Gone with the Wind, "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn."
    • When Plankton says "I love the smell of tar in the morning," it is a parody of the famous line "I love the smell of napalm in the morning" from Apocalypse Now.
  • The Something Song: The Jellyfishing Song.
  • Tempting Fate: After SpongeBob and Patrick are abandoned right on the edge of nowhere, SpongeBob remarks "At least it isn't raining." It then shows a single cloud pouring rain onto SpongeBob and Patrick.
  • Time for Plan B: With Mr. Krabs actually losing his business to Plankton thanks to the Superhighway, he decides it's time to activate Plan Zed-Niner-Niner. Unfortunately for SpongeBob and Squidward, it means that he's going to sell the Krabby Patty Secret Formula to Plankton.
  • Trade Snark: "Plan approved by Sheldon J. Plankton Enterprises, a division of No Fun Incorporated."
  • Triumphant Reprise: Everyone sings a reprise of "The Jellyfishing Song" as the highway is demolished and Jellyfish Fields is restored.
  • Unsound Effect: When SpongeBob tries to get Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy to help him stop the construction of the Shelly Superhighway: "APATHY!!!"
  • World-Wrecking Wave: When the superhighway is being built, it sucks out the life in Jellyfish Fields as it progresses through.
  • Yes-Man: Mr. Krabs loves saying "aye". He regrets it later, after he realized that he unwittingly said it during a vote for the superhighway.
Mr. Krabs: Oh, why did I say "aye"?
