nice day for a boat ride
The Black Dragon Arc is the sixth story arc of Soul Eater. Death the Kid and the Thompson Sisters investigate the disappearance of souls and encounter not only the Flying Dutchman but Crona and Ragnarok. Meanwhile, Stein and Sid investigate the possibility of Dr. Medusa being a Witch and her interest in Maka and Soul.

"The Black Dragon Arc" contains examples of:

  • Cliffhanger: we don't find out whether sid and nigus survived the toadbomb blast from Eruka and we don't get an answer to what the phrase "the kishin next to us" means
  • Fisher King: The Flying Ductchman is at one with his ship, so when the ship is cut in half by Crona, so is his head, right down the middle
  • Ghost Ship: The Nidhogg serves as this, captained by the Flying Dutchman himself
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Patty asks Liz what we are all thinking; "Does that person look like a boy or a girl?, cause I can't tell"
  • Light Is Good: The ghost are all a pale version of light but are all good people who genuinely want to help Liz
  • Losing Your Head: Getting his head cut off doesn't seem to bother the captain at all, he's mostly just angry with Crona and Ragnarok eating all the souls he was going to off to the kishin.
  • Mysterious Mist: whenever the Nidhogg shows up, a mist appears
  • No-Sell: Kid and Crona both show examples of this;
    • Kid does not show even a scratch from the captian firing cannons at him
    • Crona shows this twice. first all of Kids attacks did nothing to stop him. Second, he was also baraged by the cannon fire but had a soul produced sheild to protect themself
  • Off with His Head!!: Crona cuts the Flying Dutchmans head right off his body at the jaw line
  • Ominous Fog: Whenever the Nidhogg shows up, a mist shows up as well. it only goes away when the ship does. Kid even remarks a that the Ghost Ship was causeing the Mysterious Mist all along as it goes away when the Nidhogg sinks
  • Our Dragons Are Different: The Nidhogg was also called the black dragon in legends. Ragnarok invokes this tropes as his form changes to a true black dragon after consuming all the souls on the Nidhogg.
  • Our Ghosts Are Different: All the ghost on the Nidhoog are past victims of the ship who were swallowed up. Liz is naturally afraid of them.
  • Sheep in Wolf's Clothing: The little girl ghost and all the ghost on the ship invoke this as they try to help Liz find her way back to Kid and Patty.
  • Some Kind of Force Field: Crona seems to have gained this from eating all the souls on the Nidhogg, as they were unharmed by all the cannon fire the captain shot at them.
  • Synchronization: a variant, between a person and ship rather than two people, see Fisher King above. When the Nidhogg got cut in half by Crona, the captains head also split down the middle, but doesn't die as he still has a small rowboat to sail with.
  • Wham Line: "I'm talking about the kishin right next to you"
