Recap / Sonic Prime S1E2 "The Yoke's On You"

Go To

After the Chaos Council's attempts to test Sonic's powers leads to Sonic putting on a blast of energy knocking the power out across the city, Sonic and Nine find themselves being rescued by two familiar rebels who took the outage as an opportunity to strike.

Tropes:

  • Any Last Words?: Invoked by Sonic, who asks to be allowed to say a few words before the Chaos Council extract his Paradox energy and kill him, in order to stall for time until Nine can enact his rescue plan. Doctor Babble catches on and cuts him off before he can finish, and it turns out Nine never had a plan.
  • Badass in Distress: Sonic overloads the testing facility from seemly to have limitless power but the same kind of energy as a paradox shard, but is knocked out in the process and restrained once again. The rest of the episode has Nine, Renegade Knucks and Rebel Rouge fight Rusty Rose and the Eggbots while rescuing Sonic.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Rebel Rouge and Renegade Knucks arrive just in time to rescue Sonic from having his Paradox energy extracted, a process that is implied to be fatal to him.
  • Circling Birdies: At the end of the opening flashback, Sonic gets dazed by a punch from Shadow, then a trio of actual Flickies starts flying around his head.
  • Cliffhanger: Sonic is pinned to a wall by Rusty Rose, who is about to "terminate" him.
  • Furry Reminder: In a flashback Rebel Rouge is seen sleeping upside down in a palm branch like a real bat.
  • Hope Bringer: While the complacent populace don't escape from the authorities, when Sonic causes a temporary blackout across New Yoke City, they believe this may be a sign that hope still exists and they should likely join the resistance.
  • "I Know You're in There Somewhere" Fight: Sonic attempts one of these on Rusty Rose. It doesn't work.
  • Insistent Terminology: When Sonic introduces Shadow to the viewers and points out how he roller-skates, Shadow gives an Aside Glance to the screen and states they're air shoes.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Sonic decides not to tell Shadow about Eggman getting the Paradox Prism. That said, Sonic is too busy catching up with the others.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • After 31 years, this is the first major Sonic adaptation to show Sonic actually losing Rings when he is hit, courtesy of Shadow.
    • Big is referred to as "Citizen 1998", a nod to the original Japanese release date of Sonic Adventure, his debut game.
  • Not Hyperbole: Sonic apparently does not realize that when Shadow admonishes him for having "literally shook the world", the other hedgehog is referring to the explosion Sonic set off earlier that did just that.
  • Secret Message Wink: Subverted. As Sonic begins his Final Speech, Nine winks, causing Sonic to think he has a plan and begin stalling for time while winking back at him. Once Doctor Babbles catches on and cuts him off, Sonic asks Nine to hurry up with his plan, whereupon Nine reveals he never had a plan and merely had dust in his eye.
  • Synchronous Episodes: The episode overlaps with the previous one, with Rebel Rouge and Renegade Knucks seeing Sonic and Nine get captured and deciding to rescue them. Just as they're pondering how to do so, the episode catches up with itself and Sonic creates an explosion of Paradox energy that knocks out the city's power, giving them an opening.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: A flashback shows Shadow confronting Sonic wondering about the explosion he and the Eggman mecha caused.
  • Worf Had the Flu: Sonic spends the entire episode dizzy and disoriented after the Chaos Council's tests, is barely able to contribute to the ensuing battle, and the episode ends with Rusty Rose cornering him and preparing to deliver the final blow.
