Recap / Sofia The First S 1 E 04 Cedrics Apprentice

Go To

Cedric finds himself tested when Sofia asks him to help her pass her sorcery test and becomes his apprentice.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • An Aesop: Slow and steady does the trick.
  • Animate Inanimate Object: Cedric attempts to turn a gargoyle into a golden horse for King Magnus, but it backfires and it also brings the statue to life.
  • Animorphism: One of Cedric's potions turns Sofia into a lizard.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Spending time with Sofia causes Cedric to rethink his plot to take the amulet, especially when she leaves him some rubies in the shape of a heart. Later during the magic show he is about to use his invisibility potion to carry out the plan, but one look at Sofia's smiling face makes him unable to do so, so he uses it on Clover instead.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Cedric acts nice whenever Sofia is around, but it isn't until she is hustled out the door that he can focus on his schemes.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Cedric fails at his Series Goal once again, as he cannot bring himself to do so for the sake of hurting Sofia's feelings. But Sofia has truly seen the good in him and she did help prove himself worthy of being a great sorcerer, and it is seen that he is so moved by her kindness that he puts off his schemes for another time.
  • A Day in the Limelight: For Cedric.
  • Good Angel, Bad Angel: When Cedric is torn between whether or not he should take the Amulet from Sofia, his parents pull him in different directions with Goodwin as the angel and Winifred as the devil.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Cedric shows true concern when Sofia accidentally turns herself into a lizard with one of the potions.
  • Foreshadowing: Whenever Cedric stares at Sofia's amulet and thinks of taking it, it appears to give off a very faint glow in the light; this is because the amulet is warning Cedric to not steal it, because if he took it without warning, then it would place a curse on the thief until they returned it to its chosen bearer, which becomes important in "Cedric Be Good".
  • Friend-or-Idol Decision: The idol in Cedric's case being the Amulet, and Sofia being the friend. In the final magic act, Cedric can use the invisibility potion on himself or something else; he chose the latter.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Implied. In the end, Cedric cannot bring himself to take the Amulet because seeing Sofia's smiling face is what reminds him she helped him prove what a great sorcerer he is, and since said goal would hurt her feelings, he ultimately uses the invisibility potion on Clover instead for the best.
  • "I Want" Song: Cedric has “Cedric the Great” as he longs to impress his parents by becoming ruler of Enchancia. Doubles as a Villain Song.
  • Loophole Abuse: Since Cedric cannot tell Sofia to hand the amulet to him because she promised her dad she wouldn't take it off, he tries to get around this by using the invisibility potion to swipe it from her without warning.
  • Power Floats: Cedric's first trick for the magic show is to make Clover fly; it backfires due to his nervousness and makes him bounce instead.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Sofia doesn't seem to hear Cedric mumble his scheme next to her, despite being loud enough for her to hear.
  • Rule of Three: Sofia has to transform three objects for her sorcery test.
  • Shout-Out: The title is a reference to The Sorcerer's Apprentice. Sofia's apprentice outfit is a purple version of the one worn by Mickey Mouse in Fantasia.
  • Training Montage: Cedric teaching Sofia sorcery and bonding with her.
  • Unknown Rival: Sofia is completely oblivious that the reason Cedric is teaching her is because he's only using her to take her amulet.
  • Unwitting Pawn: Sofia is this briefly when she finds the two missing ingredients for Cedric's invisibility potion, not knowing she's helping him successfully complete his plan to take her amulet and further his goal to take over Enchancia.
  • The Voiceless: Amber doesn't speak throughout the episode.
