Recap / Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! S1E17 "That's Snow Ghost"

Go To

While on a skiing vacation at Wolf's End Lodge, the kids are scared by the ghost of a Yeti, called the Snow Ghost, who’s believed to turn anyone he captures into ghosts. In search of clues, the gang eventually meet a Tibetan hermit who thinks he’s responsible for summoning the monster.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Bigfoot, Sasquatch, and Yeti: The Snow Ghost comes from an account told by Fu Lan Chi to Greenway, involving his encounter with a yeti, whose ghost returned for revenge, to the point of following him all the way to the United States. It’s ambiguous how much truth there is to the following him bit.
  • Cast as a Mask: The Snow Ghost's vocal effects are provided by Vic Perrin, but his true identity, Mr. Greenway, was voiced by Hal Smith.
  • Conveyor Belt o' Doom: The sawmill variety is used, when the Snow Ghost attempts to kill Velma this way. Luckily Scooby-Doo comes to her rescue.
  • Damsel in Distress: It’s Velma’s turn to fill Daphne’s shoes as she’s nearly murdered by the Snow Ghost via a sawmill.
  • Fat Bastard: The very large Mr. Greenway delights in tormenting the kids with scary stories about the Snow Ghost, laughing hysterically as he tells them that if they're captured, they'll be turned into ghosts, too. He's also the Villain of the Week (along with Mr. Leech).
  • Improvised Weapon: With the Snow Ghost about to throw Scooby off a cliff, Shaggy packs together a giant snowball and uses a tree to fling it at the monster.
  • Never Say "Die": The Snow Ghost is obviously pursuing the gang with lethal intent, but it's stated that he "turns people into ghosts" instead of using the word "kill."
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: Mr. Greenway is a clear Expy of Sydney Greenstreet, and his accomplice Mr. Leech is a Lorre Lookalike.
  • Noble Wolf: Fu Lan Chi has a white timber wolf as his friend and protector, and said wolf is calm and non-threatening around the gang. Just don't steal his food.
  • Recycled Soundtrack: When the gang follows the Snow Ghost's tracks on a pair of snowmobiles, a jazzy cue taken from Jonny Quest plays (one that would later be frequently recycled in The Funky Phantom two years later).
  • Revealing Cover-Up: If Mr. Greenway hadn't dressed up as the Snow Ghost, the gang would probably never had uncovered the jewel-smuggling operation. They were there to go skiing and began investigating because of the Snow Ghost, and not because of the suspicious behavior of Leech and Greenway.
  • Super-Persistent Predator: The Yeti from Fu Lan Chi's flashback was relentless in trying to catch him, which came with a fatal consequence when it jumped after him onto a narrow ledge where it slipped and fell off. But then it came back from the dead just to continue in its chase after him (that is, assuming if it didn't survive the fall).
  • Tree Buchet: Needing some way to throw a giant snowball at the Snow Ghost, Shaggy bends a sapling nearly to the ground and releases it to catapult the missile at the monster.
