Recap / SMG4's Mario Bloopers Mario Gets Lit

Go To

Mario goes to a music festival and gets more lit than ever before.

The gang go to the Spicy Man music festival where Saiko runs into Kaizo, who has taken over the main event. Meanwhile, Bob and Boopkins battle over their preferred types of music, while Mario and Meggy compete to become the new "Spicy Man" (literally).

Tropes:

  • The Bus Came Back: Aziz Yousi from Sunset Paradise returns following that series' finale, marking his first appearance in the main SMG4 series.
  • The Cameo: Pearl and Marina make their first appearance since "If Mario Was in... Splatoon 2".
  • The Chew Toy: Poor Luigi gets it rough after he gets accused by the crowd of shoving a guy that Saiko knocks over by accident; Mario's attempts to help him out only wind up cooking him by mistake; and he gets totally forgotten by everybody after Saiko gets the crowd's attention.
  • Eating Contest: Mario and Meggy compete in one by eating a crapton of spicy peppers to become the next "Spicy Man". Mario wins, but catches fire.
  • Feud Episode: Boopkins and Bob fight throughout the episode over whether nightcore or rap is better. In the end, they set their differences aside when they invent "Bobkin Core", a mashup of both genres.
  • Fictional Counterpart: The Spicy Man Music Festival is the SMG4verse's equivalent to Burning Man.
  • Fire-Breathing Diner: Aziz's chili peppers have this effect: just licking one causes Meggy to shrivel up from the heat, and eating enough of them causes them to not only breathe, but catch on fire.
  • Have We Met?: Meggy asks Aziz this upon meeting him for the first time since Sunset Paradise. Aziz says he's never met Meggy before, likely because she's no longer in the same Animesque style he recognizes.
  • Instant Roast: Happens to Luigi due to Mario attempting to save him from the two guys Saiko shoved out of the way.
  • Man on Fire: A result of Mario eating Aziz's Spicy Shroom on top of the chili peppers he ate earlier.
  • Pet the Dog: Though he fails, Mario makes the effort to help Luigi as he gets beaten up by a crowd.
  • Puff of Logic: The anime nightcore singers disappear when Bob declares that anime isn't real. They return in the next scene somehow.
  • Pun-Based Title: Usually "getting lit" means "becoming cool". In this episode, Mario does indeed get lit...on fire, after pigging out on spicy foods in an Eating Contest; in terms of "coolness", he's ignored by pretty much everyone except Aziz for his accomplishment.
  • Series Continuity Error: Bob disses anime and calls it not real in this episode, whereas in the past he was a proud weeb, though he could've just said this due to being caught up in his feud with Boopkins.
  • Two Lines, No Waiting: The episode has three subplots: one where Mario and Meggy face off in the "Spicy Man" contest; another with Boopkins and Bob feuding over the superior musical genre; and a third with Kaizo returning and Saiko having to deal with getting one-upped by him at her favorite music event. They end up tying together in the end when Saiko joins the stage with a reconciled Boopkins and Bob while Mario sets the Spicy Man statue behind them on fire for added visual effect.
  • Unaffected by Spice: Zig-Zagged. At first Mario complains of the burning from getting spicy chili peppers in his mouth, but quickly finds them delicious after swallowing them and gorges on more. Later in the episode, however, he starts turning bright red and eventually collapses from heart failure from eating so much hot spice (and catching on fire).
