Recap / SMG4 - The Stupid Mario Movie

Go To

What if the SMG4 Mario was in the Super Mario Bros. Movie? Chaos.

On a delayed road trip to see The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Mario ends up backwards-long-jumping so hard he spirals into the movie's universe and finds himself living out the plot in his own… unique way.

  • Alternate Universe: Mario ends up in the Movie universe after BLJing in an attempt to get to the movie faster.
  • Big "WHAT?!": Peach's response to seeing Mario fly overhead.
  • Blatant Lies: When SMG4 asks Mario if everything is alright after the latter has been rather quiet, Mario claims that "absolutely nothing interesting happened in the last hour."
  • Continuity Nod:
    • The frame story takes place in SMG4's RV, which first appeared in "If Mario Was In Splatoon 3" and has been his temporary home since "My Roommate Mario".
    • After Mario BLJs out of the RV, he flies over Peach building a rocket in the crater where her castle used to be, still trapped down there after the events of IT'S GOTTA BE PERFECT.
    • As Mario flies backwards through different dimensions, the first one he passes through is the ruined remnants of Spudnik's Adventure, SMG1 and SMG2's original home, whose destruction at the hands of Zero we saw in "The Other Universe".
  • Death Is Cheap:
    • Mario lands in the Movie universe by crashing into Chris Pratt who is clearly killed in the impact, but he shows up at the end of the episode without so much as a scratch.
    • In a parody of one movie trailer scene, Bowser tries to rip a tuft of hair out of Luigi's moustache, but somehow rips Luigi's entire face off like a mask, leaving only his skull. Bowser drops his body on the ground in shock. Luigi is fine a few scenes later.
    • Cranky is shot in the head by Mario but recovers for the arena fight. He's shot in the face again during the Kart Racing segment but barely reacts.
  • Does Not Know His Own Strength: Movie!Bowser tries to emulate the "mustache torture scene" from the film on Movie!Luigi, but accidentally rips his whole face with a simple tug at his mustache hair. He sheepishly tries to restore the hapless victim's face and walks off whistling nervously.
  • Disguised in Drag: The client who called Mario Bros. Plumbing is Kamek dressed (poorly) as a woman.
  • Extremely Short Timespan: At the end, Mario reveals that the entire adventure only took an hour.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: As Mario flies away, one can briefly see Peach building a rocket to escape her castle and the ruins of Spudnik's universe.
  • Minimalist Cast: Like previous "Stupid Mario" episodes, this one contains ONLY the canon Mario cast plus SMG4 (the latter necessary only for the framing story).
  • Not Quite Dead: This episode shows unambiguously that SMG4-Peach did not die after she managed to sleep through the demonic consumption of her castle. In fact, she is actively working to escape.
  • One-Winged Angel: When Chris Pratt Mario arrives near the end of the episode, he transforms into one. Bonus points for referencing the Trope Namer with a single angel wing.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Kamek's disguise is just him wearing Peach's dress and a wig. He doesn't even cover his face or change his voice. Luigi is shocked but Mario saw through it immediately.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: Mario, naturally. In the fewer than ten seconds Toad looked away from Mario, Mario managed to set the entirety of Toad Town on fire. Peach wants to use this to her advantage.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: The Peach in the movie universe is a lot more reasonable than the one in SMG4's world. Mario set her kingdom on fire but she immediately realizes his destructive nature can be used against Bowser, and asks him to help in return for not arresting him.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Instead of listening to Peach's terms, Mario sends her flying with a massive punch while the HUD from Pizza Tower appears on the screen, only with Mario on the TV monitor instead of Peppino.
    • The DK Crew's secret formation is them singing a remixed version of the theme song from iCarly.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Mario invokes this in his fight with Bowser, feeding him a chicken nugget and causing him to start acting like his SMG4 counterpart.
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight:
    • Mario and SMG4 are held up on their way to the Mario Movie because "The Gnomes are crossing." We're treated to about a dozen garden gnomes crossing the highway, some speaking Russian, all carrying Glocks. Neither act like this is anything out of the ordinary which, since this is the SMG4-universe, it probably isn't.
    • Mario looks bored while falling down the Warp Pipe and declares "Ahite. I'mma head out." before summoning a portal and heading through it. Meanwhile, Luigi is still screaming and flailing.
