Recap / SMG4 - A Happy Little Road Trip

Go To

SMG4's excited about his new RV and takes Mario & Meggy on a beeeg drive to somewhere special, but uh... some stuff happens.

SMG4 takes Meggy and Mario on a surprise road trip to somewhere special. Naturally, Finagle's Law kicks in as his rambunctious friends wreak havoc inside the RV, which later gets hijacked by Walter White and Jesse Pinkman during a forced stop at McDonald's.

  • Accidental Murder: Near the start of the trip, SMG4 doesn't pay attention to the road and accidentally hits a child on the nearby sidewalk. He assumes the 'bump' was just a pothole.
SMG4: Damn roads and their potholes...
  • Bait-and-Switch: Shortly after the RV trip first begins, a boy is seen playing with his dog next to a street. The kid throws a ball into the street with the dog running after it, leading the audience to believe the dog will be run over, only for the RV to instead appear driving on the sidewalk and run over the child. This is far from the first time SMG4 has pulled this joke.
  • Call-Back:
    • Bob's business is still next door to Meggy's home and still operating, now with a new sign reading "Hotel Bob" (in the font style of the Hotel Mario title screen). As the RV drives away, he briefly cameos asking what all the noise was.
    • Restaurant "Los Pollos Hermanos" (lit. "The Chicken Brothers") last appeared during the Lawsuit Arc as a front for Bob and Boopkins to re-corrupt the Mushroom Kingdom with illegal memes.
    • This episode is the first time the Spaghetti Factory has been mentioned since its original appearance way back in "BENDY and the SPAGHETTI MACHINE". Strangely, Swag is implied to still be working there, even though he's been shown with a dozen different careers since its episode.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Luigi swiftly and brutally mops the floor with Walter and Jesse once Mario summons him to help turn the tide in his and Meggy's favor.
  • Diegetic Visual Effects: Just as Meggy is about to blow a gasket at SMG4 for landing his RV on top of Mario, she's knocked out of frame by a side-wipe screen transition which contains the logo for the MTV series Cribs.
  • Groin Attack: While fighting to get the RV back from Walter and Jesse, Meggy delivers a flying punch straight to Jesse's nadgers.
  • Manchild: Mario, as per usual. See his obsession with getting to wherever they're going, then getting bored during the trip and bugging Meggy, then demanding they stop at McDonald's.
  • Not So Above It All: Meggy of all people gets in on Mario's Manchild act, reacting to his Torment by Annoyance and SMG4's scolding like a bickering sibling and needing little persuasion from Mario to join him in getting SMG4 to stop at McDonald's. She acts noticeably more childish in this episode than usual, in contrast to her usually being very mature compared to Mario.
  • Running Gag: Mario obsesses over McDonald's in this episode. Once the RV drives past one, he manages to convince Meggy to have SMG4 stop there for some food. Once the trio gets to Los Pollos Hermanos, Gus reveals that he intends on taking over McDonald's.
  • Shout-Out:
    • As noted above, SMG4 shows off the interior of his RV in the style of long-running MTV series Cribs. He's even wearing fancy sunglasses just to heighten the effect. Of course, this being SMG4 (the character and series), it's absolutely filthy. He brags about its "barely working toilet".
    • Mario's reaction to SMG4's RV "setup" is to turn into Reggie Fils-Aime (former CEO of Nintendo of America) and give a wavering fist that eventually ends at thumbs-up, itself Reggie's Call-Back to when Shigeru Miyamoto did the same thing.
  • Too Kinky to Torture: After his RV is stolen by Walter, SMG4 gives up and curls into a ball in the McDonald's parking lot, saying he's going to cry himself to sleep… by listening to this ASMR video of a yandere girl who sounds a lot like Meggy's voice actress (but is not her).
  • Torment by Annoyance: A bored Mario ends up annoying Meggy by holding up a finger near her face, even growing multiple arms for the sake of bothering her. This is what finally gets Meggy to snap and become just as childish as Mario.
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight:
    • The RV first appears by falling out of the sky and crashing in front of Meggy's house. Her only comment was that SMG4 needed to work on his parking, having landed on Mario, who doesn't seem too bothered by it.
Mario: "I can't-a feel my pinus."
    • The RV drives by a field with many strange random events. When Meggy gets Mario to look out the window to enjoy the view, the latter immediately dismisses everything as "boring".
