Recap / SMG4 - SMG4... Are You Ok?

Go To

SMG3 finally surpasses SMG4.

SMG3's surprisingly successful Twitch streams attract Mr. Yeast's attention, and he ends up doing collabs with him. Jealous, SMG4 does his darndest to catch up with him and prove himself collab-worthy, but his methods go overboard and the ensuing consequences may require his rival's help to fix his image.

This episode marks the beginning of the Puzzlevision saga.

  • Advertised Extra: Mario appears prominently in the thumbnail for the video standing behind SMG4, but in reality, his role in the video is relatively minor, appearing in one scene that lasts for about a minute and a half before disappearing for the rest of the video.
  • The Bus Came Back: This episode is Frankie's first major appearance since "If Mario Was In... ROBLOX".
  • Captain Ersatz: MrBeast is one of SMG3's fans, but he uses a TTS voice and goes by "Mr. Yeast" instead.
  • A Day in the Limelight: SMGs 3 and 4 take center stage in this episode, which focuses on the latter's jealousy of the former's popular Twitch streams and collabs with Mr. Yeast.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: SMG4's idea of making more content to get Mr. Yeast's attention is to sit dozens of Toads in rows in a dark room, force them to work tirelessly with no breaks, and whip ones that don't do a good job of making content. In other words, SMG4 has become a slavedriver.
  • Everyone Has Standards: As spaghetti obsessed Mario is, even he would not want to make it in a crashing plane.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: It's glaringly obvious SMG4 is jealous of the fact that SMG3's burst of success is making him more popular than he could ever hope to be, causing him to use rather immoral methods to catch up with him.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: SMG4 claims nobody will want to watch SMG3's stream, then goes to bed. Cut to morning, and SMG3's stream has 3 million viewers.
  • Karma Houdini: Zig-Zagged. SMG4 gets cancelled and ostracised when he's revealed to have enslaved Toads to make videos for him. However, he easily gets uncancelled when he and SMG3 make a funny memetic video.
  • A Lesson Learned Too Well: SMG4 learns that pumping out videos en masse isn't the right way but instead of moderating himself, switches gears to making a "perfect" video.
  • Not What I Signed on For: When SMG3 and Mr. Yeast reveal that Mario will be cooking his spaghetti on a plane that's about to crash, Mario panics and claims it's not what he signed up for.
  • Not What It Looks Like: In an effort to make people forget about SMG4's wrongdoing, SMG3 starts playing with toys with him. Meggy walks in on them doing this, gets the wrong idea, and hastily leaves.
  • Pet the Dog: After SMG3 finishes his video with Mr. Yeast, he asks if he'd like to do a collab with SMG4 next after noticing him follow them around the whole time. Unfortunately, Mr. Yeast refuses.
  • Readings Blew Up the Scale: Inverted. When SMG4 tries making more content, his rating charts actually spike so hard downwards that the arrow breaks out of SMG4's phone.
  • Running Gag: Mr. Yeast leaving the scene in increasingly elaborate vehicles. The first time it's a simple car. The second time he has a boat, despite being land, only for the boat to then fly. The third time, he and SMG3 take off in a UFO.
  • Sanity Slippage: SMG3 suddenly becoming popular through genuine means causes SMG4 to try so hard to surpass everyone that he actually forgets the importance of the quality of videos, and when SMG3 has to remind him that quality is more important than quantity, he ends up taking it to the most logical extreme and becomes hyper fixated at making the "best video ever".
  • Temporarily a Villain: SMG4's jealousy of SMG3 and his desire to become more popular than him leads him to act not so different from how SMG3note  used to act, even going so far as to enslave the Toads.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: SMG3 finally surpasses SMG4 in popularity with his Twitch streams- this time as a forgivable Anti-Hero rather than a full-on villain.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Several of the challenges are depicted are more than a bit lethally stupid, such as SMG3 streaming for 24 hours in a burning building, a group of Mr. Yeast's followers trying to be the last ones holding on to speeding automobiles, and Mario trying to cook spaghetti in a crashing plane.
  • You Were Trying Too Hard: When Mr. Yeast decides that SMG4 is unworthy of being collabed with, SMG4, out of desperation, forces Toads to make him tons of content for him, believing that more equals better, causing him to become even worse of in popularity than where he was before. SMG3 of all people is the one who has to explain that people only care about the quality of the content, but once SMG4 learns that, he suddenly becomes super obsessed with making "the best video ever," making him continue to look like an obsessed maniac.
