Contains examples of:

  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: Once he's finally defeated, Francis begs to be spared. Unfortunately for him, Saiko has no plans of doing so and everyone else has no plans of stopping her.
  • All Your Powers Combined: After the Sephiroth clones are destroyed, everyone takes their turn in beating up Francis. Even notable non-combatants like Boopkins and Tari.
  • Antagonist in Mourning: DJ Octavio, the Big Bad of Splatoon, attends Desti's funeral.
  • Asshole Victim: Francis has shown what an utter scumbag he is by kidnapping and torturing inklings and by murdering Desti and laughing sadistcally about it. Thus he completely and utterly deserved the fate that Saiko gives him.
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: As if Francis needed any more reasons to be despised, he tries to gloss over Desti's death. Moments after personally killing her, and while Tari is audibly sobbing over her dead body, no less.
Francis: Oh, don't be so dramatic. Did anyone really care about her anyway?
  • Big Damn Heroes: Several:
    • Things start off looking hopeless for the good guys and get even worse when Francis makes one hundred Sephiroth copies. But then they're saved by Bob, Swagmaster and Chris who bust into the fray on a tank.
    • In the middle of Super Saiyan God Goku doing a number on everybody, Axol manages to wrestle away Ink Weaver from Francis. Francis calls for Goku but his cries for help are thwarted due to Goku being distracted by Tari, of all people.
    • Goku destroys the Ink Zuccer machine, possibly taking Meggy and Axol with it. Mario is too busy digging through the debris to look for his close friend and once again all hope seems lost. Then Axol reappears with a fully charged Ink Weaver and summons Ultra Instinct Shaggy.
  • Bittersweet Ending: The ending of the Anime Arc is a first in SMG4 History. The Inkweaver is returned to Axol, all the Inklings are rescued, Francis meets his demise in his island's explosion, and the main cast make it out safely with Meggy thanks to Ultra Instinct Shaggy. However, Desti is killed for her troubles (a funeral is even held for her), and Meggy is transformed into a human, probably permanently, due to her sacrificing her ink to save her friends.
  • The Cameo: Bowser can be seen attending Desti's funeral, despite being absent for all of the Anime Arc.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Saiko stuffs Francis into the Ink-Zuccer 2000 and turns it up to maximum efficiency. As if that weren't brutal enough of a fate for him, Anime Island gets blown up due to Super Saiyan God Goku self-destructing. Not saying he didn’t deserve it.
  • Call-Back: Mario takes the appearance he had in Final Fantasy Mario in a attempt to scare the army of Sephiroth replicas.
  • Defiant to the End: Even with Super Saiyan God Goku being created, Mario and the others are prepared to fight him despite the slim odds.
Francis: Oh come on! Why don't you guys just give up?
SMG4: You don't understand. We're either leaving with Meggy...or not at all.
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing: When SMG4 tells Shaggy to grab all the Inklings from the island, he doesn't bring Meggy until Axol specifically tells him to—a subtle hint that she's no longer an Inkling right before the big reveal.
  • Grand Finale: Of the Anime Arc.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Meggy makes the extremely tough choice of enduring another round of the Ink Zuccer 2000 so that Axol has enough ink, and while Goku is unsuccessful in interrupting the process, he destroys the Ink Zuccer while she's still in it. Subverted when she's shown to be saved by Ultra Instinct Shaggy, though at the cost of becoming an anime girl.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Francis is defeated by being thrown into the Ink Zuccer 2000 and it being set to maximum efficiency. Doubles as a Karmic Death.
  • Humanity Ensues: Due to sacrificing all of her ink and the explosion at Anime Island, Meggy is turned into an anime-style human.
  • It's All My Fault: Meggy blames herself for Desti's death at the latter's funeral, thinking that it could all be prevented if she was a little faster and a little stronger. Axol and the others thankfully snap her out of it.
  • Killed Off for Real: Both Francis and Desti. While Desti faced Uncertain Doom in the previous episode, this episode confirmed that she died. Francis meanwhile, was thrown into an active Zuccer machine by Saiko as Anime Island blew up, though we never see him die on-screen.
  • Made Myself Sad: Boopkins does this in the beginning.
Francis: You know Saiko-chan, you can still join my island of waifus if you want...
    Saiko: I'D RATHER DIE!
Boopkins: Yeah, we're gonna die together!...(beat) Awww, man...
  • Major Injury Underreaction: Chris and Swagmaster get set on fire by Goku's Kamehameha and don't even flinch.
  • Meaningful Funeral: The episode (and the Anime Arc) ends with Desti's funeral, attended by most of the main cast.
  • Mood Whiplash: Courtesy of Bob. During Desti's funeral, of all things.
    Tari: What's wrong...Meggy?
Meggy: I don't know what to do.
Bob: I think you're meant to push the boat.
    (Saiko elbows him)
SMG4: We know you've been knocked down a lot lately, Meggy.
Tari: But you always have to get back up again!
Luigi: And if you can't right now, that's okay!
Boopkins: Cause we'll be right here to pick you up!
Bob: Yeah! I'm great at picking up chicks!
Saiko: You know what he means...
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Despite the timely intervention from Bob and The Guards against Francis, their attempt to finish him off via tank rounds backfire, as it knocks Francis into the glass ink container of the Ink Zuccer 2000. This causes him to be humiliatingly drenched in ink...but it charges Ink Weaver to 100% as well.
  • Rousing Speech:
  • Shout-Out:
Chris: WE DON'T HAVE TIME FOR ALL OF THAT! JUST FIRE!
    • When Meggy's new human appearance is revealed, Mario says "You don't look so good, Mr. Meggy" in reference to the infamous scene with Spider-Man in Avengers: Infinity War.
    • Desti's funeral is also very reminiscent of Tony's from Avengers: Endgame.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Francis increasingly loses his cool as Mario and company get the better of him. Once the final replica (Goku) is taken out of the picture, he's reduced to a sobbing wreck, pleading for mercy.
  • Wham Episode: Desti is confirmed to be Killed Off for Real, and Meggy's been turned into a human.
