Recap / Runaways (2017) S03E10: "Cheat the Gallows"

Go To

Two years after defeating Morgan, visitors from the future send the Runaways back through time to prevent their own murders and even save a friend thought lost forever.

  • Beard of Sorrow: Chase has grown one during the time skip.
  • Died in Your Arms Tonight: Future Chase dies in Gert's arms, and then disappears.
  • Easy Amnesia:
    • Nico erases everyone's memories of the future versions' presence on the bus.
    • Nico gives her younger self a pep talk about not leaving Karolina, then vanishes from her younger self's sight and erases her memory, so she will consider the new ideas but not remember how she got them.
  • Future Me Scares Me: Alex is visibly disturbed by his future self.
  • Grand Finale: Of the entire series.
  • Idiot Ball: Chase is convinced he can step in for Gert at the crucial time and they will still win, but he's not as good at giving a compelling The Reason You Suck speech to Morgan and everything is nearly lost.
  • The Missus and the Ex: Karolina's current girlfriend and ex-girlfriend actually. Julie and Nico, respectively.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Julie is named after Julie Power, Karolina's first girlfriend before she started dating Nico in the comics.
    • The Evil Future Alex, of course, references the fact that Alex turns out to be Evil All Along in the comics.
  • Never the Selves Shall Meet: Future Chase warns his friends not to encounter their younger selves. The rule is thrown out the window when the teenage Alex runs into the future versions of his friends and himself on the bus.
  • Ret-Gone: The future selves disappear when their past versions save Gert.
  • The Reveal: Future Alex left his younger self a note before they fade away. Apparently, Nico is the one who'll try to kill Alex, but it's never revealed why.
  • Set Right What Once Went Wrong: The future versions travel back in time to prevent Gert's death.
  • Time Skip: The episode takes place three years after the previous one.
  • Timey-Wimey Ball: While Runaways is not the first or last installment of the MCU with time-travel in it, this is the only version of time-travel that results in the Ret-Goning out of existence of all instances of the prevented timeline Back to the Future-style, the older versions of the Runaways fading out of existence after they avert Gert's death. Every other style of time-travel presented (Avengers: Endgame, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Loki) portrays timelines as a form of alternate universe spontaneously generated through deviations of fixed points in time.
