Recap / Runaways (2017) S02E13: "Split Up"

Go To

Angry at his betrayal, the Runways meet with Chase. He offers them a choice: surrender to PRIDE or face the consequences. As the kids attempt their escape, they're separated and forced to survive against an enemy far more pernicious than they expected.

  • A Form You Are Comfortable With: Invoked verbatim by Xavin, who takes Karolina's form hoping Leslie will be comfortable with her.
  • Abusive Parents: The Magistrate is prepared to consume not only his host's wife and son, but his own half-human daughter.
  • An Offer You Can't Refuse: PRIDE plans to collect their kids, one way or the other. They give Chase one last chance to convince them to come peacefully. When that fails, they send the drones in.
  • Artistic License – Biology: Within what couldn't be more than a day, Leslie's pregnancy becomes extremely visible.
  • Attack Drone: PRIDE sends some in for a video feed and for shooting their kids with tranquilizers. Tina controls them and wastes all the ammo, much to Victor's dismay.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Xavin (initially disguised as Mike on a Bike) saves Karolina from the Magistrate's entrapment. Unfortunately, he then knocks her out with his powers and takes her anyway.
  • Brought Down to Badass: Even without the Staff of One working properly, Nico is able to give both of her parents at once a run for their money in hand-to-hand combat.
  • The Bus Came Back: Earl, the nerd guy from the Wizard gala in "Metamorphosis", and Mike-on-a-Bike show up again.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: Alex, tired of his parents excuses, tells both of them that nobody forced them to murder all the children or Darius - they chose so themselves.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The inhibitor Robert used on Jonah is now used on Karolina by Jonah himself.
    • The gun Darius had Alex touch is now used to incriminate his parents and fired to attract the attention of the LAPD.
  • Chekhov's Lecture: Alex takes one from Darius's playbook and gets his parents to drop their guns by warning them that the LAPD will quite likely kill a black man holding a gun.
  • Crazy-Prepared: The drones are immune to both Karolina's powers and the fistigons.
  • Downer Ending: Coupled with Darkest Hour and Cliffhanger. Gert and Old Lace have been abducted by Dale, Karolina, Janet and Chase are put in stasis to be consumed by the Magistrate and his family, and there is still another alien out there, inhabiting a yet unrevealed host. Naturally, the remaining Runaways are devastated by the end of the episode.
  • Flipping the Bird: The initial response to Alex asking for a meet-up with Chase on the latter's behalf is a middle finger from all the four girls at once.
  • Guile Hero: Molly manipulates a few fellow Mexican bystanders into believing that Dale is a pedophile following her to cause a commotion and get away.
    • Alex manipulates the LAPD into arresting his parents, fully expecting they will be quick to lock them up due to their institutionalized racism.
  • Heroic Second Wind: After being defeated by her parents in hand-to-hand, Nico once again (unwillingly) taps into the powers of the Dark Dimension and knocks them out with a powerful blast.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Chase thinks that the Pride would just let him try to convince the kids to return home, and just act on whether or not the kids accept the Pride's offer. It didn't occur to him that the Pride where using him to trick the Runaways into one spot for an ambush. Despite all he has learned about them and their past actions.
  • Internal Reveal: Leslie, Karolina, Chase, Janet, Molly, Alex and Nico learn that Victor is possessed by Jonah/the Magistrate.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Alex gets his parents arrested by planting Darius's gun in their car.
  • Malaproper: Enforced, due to Nico being affected by subsonic waves, her language center produces funny words.
  • Mouth of Sauron: Chase is sent to deliver PRIDE's message to the Runaways.
  • Mythology Gag: Chase is designing the Leapfrog in a tablet.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Chase organizes a meet with the Runaways at the direction of the Pride. Lying to his former friends that he is meeting them without the Pride’s knowledge. When he fails to convince them to return to Pride, the Runaways are in a secluded spot. All in one place ready to be picked off by their parents by drones equipped to take them down.
  • No Social Skills: Xavin, big time, who keeps making advances towards Karolina and inappropriately shifting shapes. Justified off course, given that she has no experience among humans.
  • The Reveal:
    • Xavin is not a Gibborim like the Jonah and his family, she is a Xartan. Also, Jonah's real name/title is "The Magistrate".
    • Also, Leslie isn't pregnant from Frank - it's another one of the Magistrate's children and he will come to collect it.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Dale decides that Stacey's new violent tendencies are too much even for him and takes Gert and Old Lace with him on a road trip.
  • Slashed Throat: Robert gets one when Nico smashes all the glasses of the PRIDE facility.
  • Shout-Out: When seeing Alex drive, Geoffrey snarks that he never should have let him play Grand Theft Auto.
  • Skewed Priorities: Gert has a discussion with Earl on the street (the guy whom Molly robbed of his scooter moments earlier to destroy a drone) about feminism, while they are still chased by their parents.
  • Soft Glass: Apparently played straight when Nico uses the Staff to shatter glass panes and unleash upon her parents, but then it's revealed some shards cut Robert's throat.
  • Wham Line: Regarding the Magistrate/Jonah's son:
    Daughter: Who is the host?
Jonah: If it was one of the parents we would know by now.
Daughter: There's is one thing we haven't considered.
Wife: It could be one of the kids.
  • Wham Shot: Chase, Janet and Karolina are kept in the Healing Algorithm to be used as sacrifices for Jonah, his wife and his daughter.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Frank isn't shown this episode, having been thrown into reconditioning last episode.
  • You Are in Command Now: Leslie tells Karolina that with her power display in front of the Church last episode, she is gonna be their new messiah now. Karolina is not happy to hear it and refuses to take it over.
