Tired of living inside a homeless man's mouth, Ren and Stimpy move to classy new digs: the inside of a spittoon after Stimpy pools his secret stash of money into it.
Onward and Upward contains examples of:
- Animals Not to Scale: For most of the episode, Ren and Stimpy are shown to be almost mouse-sized, and are able to live inside a spittoon.
- Anthropomorphic Food: The potatoes that Ren whips are alive.
- Ass Shove: At one point, when the bar flies into a panic when Ren and Stimpy are revealed, eggs fly out of their jar and fly back into a nearby chicken this way.
- Extreme Omnivore: A very disgusting example with Ren and Stimpy consuming the restaurant patrons' snot, vomit, and even blood.
- Also, the bum that Ren and Stimpy lived in is shown to have eaten a beer can, wooden signs, and even a rat.
- Foreshadowing: At the beginning of the episode, Ren angrily tells Stimpy, "I don't give a rat's ass about your needs!". Guess what Ren tricks Stimpy into kissing.
- Groin Attack: Ren and Stimpy kick one of the bum's testicles before moving out of him.
- Kinky Role-Playing: At the end of the episode, Ren dresses up in a baseball uniform and asks Stimpy if he's ready for a "speedball." Stimpy gets very excited (with his nose swelling up) and turns around, revealing a baseball glove attached to his butt. Ren throws the ball right into the glove, knocking Stimpy into bed, which leads to the two making love. This is a Call-Back to an early discussion they had about Stimpy being the "catcher" while Ren is the "pitcher."
- Open-Fly Gag: At one point, Ren and Stimpy's flies are open, and they zip each other's up.
- Precision F-Strike: The bartender to Ren and Stimpy after they are exposed in the bar:"GET OUTTA MY FUCKIN' BAR, YOU VERMIN SONS-OF-BITCHES!!!"
- Reaction Shot: The bum is shown reacting in pain after Stimpy kicks one of his testicles.
- Something Else Also Rises: Happens with Stimpy's nose upon Stimpy seeing Ren's baseball player attire for their "pitcher/catcher" routine.
- Unusual Euphemism: "You're the pitcher, I'm the catcher!" is seemingly how Stimpy describes his and Ren's roles in anal sex.
- Wing Ding Eyes: Stimpy's pupils become hearts when he sees Ren in his baseball attire.
- Writing Lines: Stimpy shows Ren that he reminds himself who is the pitcher and who is the catcher by writing lines on a chalkboard.
- You Dirty Rat!: Ren tricks Stimpy into kissing a rat's ass. Shit and all.
