A rare truce between the twerps and Team Rocket

May's Munchlax and James's Chimecho both fall ill, and end up at the home of the same caretakers, an elderly couple who is dear to James. While Munchlax is able to recover, James faces having to leave his beloved Pokémon behind.

This episode contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Continuity Nod: The twerps identifying Mime Jr. on the spot.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: The way James leaving Chimecho behind is treated like Chimecho is dying, and James is trying to figure out how to say goodbye.
  • Don't Tell Mama: James treats the "summer cottage" caretakers as if they were his real parents, and the feelings are mutual. Thus, James doesn't want the rest of the Rockets (and even the twerps; James wanted to call a truce with them) to reveal his criminal career. He does fess up to them himself in the end.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: James unsurprisingly refuses to steal from his grandparents.
  • Friend to All Living Things: James takes after Nanny and Pop-Pop in showing kindness towards Pokémon.
  • It's All My Fault: James blames himself for Chimecho's illness, thinking it was a mistake asking it to travel back to Kanto with him.
  • Heroic RRoD: The implication of Chimecho's illness is that constantly using Heal Bell to patch up Team Rocket has taken its toll.
  • Jumped at the Call: When it was suggested that Mime Jr. join James, he was reluctant. But when James dropped one of his unused Poké Balls while reaching to get Chimecho's ball, Mime Jr. rushed it and hit the button, catching itself.
  • My Master, Right or Wrong: Cacnea obeys James's order to attack Seviper to keep Jessie from stealing Pokémon from Nanny and Pop-Pop.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: The twerps know something is wrong with Munchlax because it refused to take offered food.
    • In addition, Chimecho is so ill that its own Heal Bell doesn't work for it. In the games, Heal Bell works for the user as much as the rest of its trainer's party.
  • Never Say "Die": The English dub dances around how serious Chimecho's condition is. But then they throw in a joke about James preferring death over being Jessie's spouse.
  • Open-Minded Parent: Or in this case, grandparents. After James comes clean to his parents, admitting he’s a member of Team Rocket, while they might not approve of the choice of being with Team Rocket, they still outwardly and inwardly love him, happily accepting him for who he is.
  • Pet the Dog: There's a rather touching scene between James and May as both worry about their Pokémon.
  • Plot-Mandated Friendship Failure: James draws the line at Jessie and Meowth trying to steal Pokémon from Nanny and Pop-Pop. This results in an epic battle between Seviper and Cacnea.
  • Sick Episode: Munchlax and Chimecho; the former recovers, but Chimecho has to be left behind to recover.
  • Undercover as Lovers: Averted with James and Jessie. Nanny had heard about James's engagement, and initially thinks Jessie is the fiancée. James has an Imagine Spot of him being bossed around by Jessie. For a moment, he looks ready to throw in the towel and take his chances with Jessebelle. He says Jessie is his associate.
