Ash and his friends arrive at Wobbuffet Village, where everyone in town has a Wobbuffet. They are just in time for the Wobbuffet Festival to honor them for their patient, peaceful natures. Team Rocket also arrive in town and make friends with a woman named Lulu, who is delighted to see that Jessie has a Wobbuffet herself. Unfortunately, the festival is interrupted by three punks and their Fighting Pokémon who seem to want nothing more than to cause destruction and attack the Wobbuffet who live in the village.

Tropes

  • A Day in the Limelight: For Wobbuffet.
  • Armor of Invincibility: Jessie's Wobbuffet's Counter attack which not even Primeape, Machoke, and Hitmonlee can break through even when their trainers have their Pokémon triple tag team Jessie's Wobbuffet after being frustrated at Wobbuffet countering their attacks. When this fails, the three boys are forced to leave after their defeat.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Team Rocket's motive for defending the town.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: As soon as Team Rocket leaves after dealing with the festival crashers, they drop the hero facade by stealing a big bag of food which gets the attention of Brock, Misty, and Ash.
  • Curbstomp Battle: Machoke, Primeape, and Hitmonlee are able to defeat all but Wobbuffet effortlessly.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: The Team Rocket trio of Jessie, James, and Meowth decide to do something about the three thugs. Arbok and Victreebel get defeated effortlessly. Wobbuffet on the other hand uses nothing but its Counter attack on the Primeape, Hitmonlee, and Machoke.
  • Flat Character: The trio of thugs; they're only interested in doing nothing but attack other people's Wobbuffet and destroy the Wobbuffet statue and that's about it.
  • For the Evulz: Really the only reason the three punks assault the Wobbuffet at all. They claim to hate them because they're weak; that's all the motive we hear.
  • Holiday Ceasefire: Invoked, since Wobbuffet are incapable of attacking first, all Pokémon Battles are forbidden during the Wobbuffet Festival.
  • Honor Before Reason: The townspeople are so devoted to their tradition of not battling during the Wobbuffet Festival that they feel the need to allow the delinquents to destroy the Wobbuffet statue without fighting back.
  • Identical Twin ID Tag: Team Rocket's Wobbuffet gets a Martial Arts Headband to distinguish it from all the other Wobbuffet.
  • Jerkass: The three delinquents came to the town with their Fighting Pokémon the year before looking to destroy everything just for the fun of it until Lulu's Wobbuffet stopped them. This year they came back for revenge and take great pleasure in having their Pokémon beat up all the Wobbuffet.
  • Karma Houdini: The gang of thugs until their Laser-Guided Karma subverts this when the three boys are beaten in battle by Jessie and her Wobbuffet.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: The trio of thugs after their defeat at the hands of Team Rocket's Jessie sends them running.
  • Not Me This Time: Team Rocket isn't the one beating up the town’s Wobbuffet. When Ash and the gang confront the trio, they naturally don't buy their claims of innocence. That is until another Wobbuffet victim comes running to the scene, thus proving Team Rocket's innocence, to the twerps' surprise.
Ash: I still don't trust you three, but I guess that proves you're not the ones attacking the Wobbuffet.
    James: Of course we aren't!
Jessie: You accused us without any evidence and we demand an apology from you!
    Meowth: Say you're sorry!
    Ash: We...made a mistake.
    Brock: Sorry it happened.
    Misty: Let's go. (They leave)
James: Good luck finding the real criminals!
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Despite Lulu, one of the village resident, showing them kindness through free food and hospitality, Team Rocket decide to steal food meant for the festival.
