Recap / Pokemon EC 29 A Lava Serious Situation

Go To

Flash and his friends continue their trek up Mount Tartarus, unaware of Chrysalis and Doom Raizer's actions in the Altar of Summons. They soon find themselves attacked by a Heatran, having been unknowingly transported to the mountain against its will by Team Shadow's experiment with the altar.

  • The Ace: Aggron has effectively become the new ace of Doc’s team by the end of the chapter. Well earned considering he managed to go toe to toe with a Legendary Pokémon he has a type disadvantage against.
  • Achievements in Ignorance: Team Shadow has absolutely no idea that their messing with the Altar of Summons accidentally brought a Heatran to the mountain, that it ended up attacking their enemies, or that it unintentionally kept them from discovering them.
  • Bait-and-Switch: The previous chapter implied Team Shadow's actions at the altar were luring Flash and his friends to their location for a final confrontation. But, the group ends up getting attacked by a Heatran that was transported to the mountain and end up completely missing Team Shadow due to Heatran attacking them.
  • A Day in the Limelight: The chapter focuses on Lairon, and his attempts to act as a shield for Doc and his friends to protect them from Heatran, with him evolving into Aggron in order to protect them.
  • Disney Death: When the cave everyone is in starts to collapse and fill with lava from Aggron and Heatran fighting, everyone tries to exit through a tunnel heading outside. But the tunnel collapses before Aggron can make it through, resulting in him getting left behind. Once everyone is outside, Doc mourns for his apparently dead friend, only for Aggron to blast his way out of the mountain shortly afterwards and reunite with everyone, exhausted but alive.
  • Dramatic Irony:
    • Team Shadow is never made aware of Heatran’s presence, or that it was there because of their meddling.
    • Similarly, Heatran has no idea what pulled it from its home, and simply goes about trying to make a cave in the mountain inhabitable for itself. After it’s battle with Aggron it happens to stumble across another portal that leads directly to its home, and jumps through without questioning it.
  • Dungeon Bypass: The group ends up cutting through Mount Tartarus thanks to Heatran instead of going over it, getting them straight to Dragonia City and missing Team Shadow.
  • Heroic Second Wind: Just as Lairon is about to collapse against Heatran, he imagines how Heatran will hurt all his friends and remembers how Doc praised him for always being able to trust him to be his shield when times are tough, and he evolves into Aggron to keep protecting everyone, now able to battle Heatran better.
  • No-Sell: After Lairon evolves into Aggron, he manages to deflect a Magma Storm attack from Heatran, with barely a burn mark from it.
  • Off Screen Moment Of Awesome: The ending of Aggron’s fight with Heatran isn’t seen, but he managed to apparently fight it to a draw and still have just enough energy left to blast his way out of the mountain after the exit collapsed and reunite with everyone. Especially impressive considering that Heatran is a Legendary Pokémon and has a type advantage against Aggron.
  • Outside-Context Problem: Heatran is one for the gang. They have absolutely no idea what it is doing there or how it even got there, since they have no idea about the Altar of Summons or Team Shadow messing with it.
  • The Reveal: The final scene reveals that Lightning Blitz has acuired all eight Gym Badges required to enter the Equestria League, when the gang sees him being interviewed on TV about it.
  • Tempting Fate: When Chrysalis chastises Doom for his recklessness with the altar and they are lucky he didn't accidently summon something that could destroy the altar, Doom asks what are the odds there'd be a Legendary Pokémon waiting on the other side of a portal the altar just happened to randomly make. Though it is downplayed since neither Doom or Chrysalis end up being attacked by Heatran, only Flash and his friends, who just happened to be nearby.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Lairon evolves into Aggron and learns Heavy Slam.
