Recap / Phineas And Ferb Sipping With The Enemy

Go To

When Vanessa and Monty go on a coffee date, Perry has to prevent Doofenshmirtz from noticing them. Meanwhile, Phineas and Ferb put on a backyard magic show.

Tropes:

  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: It looks like Monty and Vanessa are going to break up over insulting each others' fathers... then they agree to meet for a second date.
  • Clark Kenting: Subverted. When Perry sees Vanessa and Monty in the coffee shop, he trades his fedora out for the hat of the person already on the couch and takes his facial hair, but Vanessa recognizes him anyway. The disguise still works on her father, though.
  • Continuity Nod: Vanessa recognizes Monty as the guy who flew off her dad's roof. Monty jokes that she'll have to be more specific as he flies off a lot of roofs.
  • Creator Cameo: Many of the patrons of the coffee shop are caricatures of the Phineas writers, notably Aliki Theofilopoulos.
  • A Day in the Limelight: For Vanessa and Monty.
  • Funny Background Event: When Vanessa calls the OWCA a glorified petting zoo Perry shoots her a glare.
  • Hipster:
    • The coffee shop that Monty and Vanessa meet at is apparently a popular spot for this kind of clientele.
    • Also, Doof's inator zaps Linda and Lawrence turning them into this.
Linda: Really, Candace? Busting? That's so beginning of summer.
Lawrence: There's a Luciano Rigatoni festival at the art house.
      Linda: Let's go.
Candace: But Rigatoni's work is passionless! With minimal importance! Every piece betrays its own lack of interest in the subject matter!
  • If I Had a Nickel...: This is what prompts Vanessa and Monty's first fight.
  • "Oh, Crap!" Smile: Perry does this when Vanessa sees through his disguise.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Perry uses a Hipster's hat and goatee to disguise himself as a patron of the coffee shop. Vanessa instantly recognizes him and asks him not to tell anyone she's with Monty. Of course, Doof fails to recognize him without his fedora.
  • Pun-Based Title: The title is a pun on Sleeping with the Enemy.
  • Seinfeldian Conversation: A bulk of the episode is just Monty and Vanessa talking and getting to know each other, a big departure from the show's trademark "joke-a-minute" form.
  • Self-Destruct Mechanism: Monty points out Vanessa's father stupidity with three little words: "Self-destruct buttons".
  • Shout-Out: Phineas and Ferb's "Mind Flip" is a reference to stage magician Criss Angel and his MINDFREAK show.
  • Subverted Catchphrase: After Phineas says the magic words, he says, "Hey! Where's Ferb?", after which, Ferb pops out of a fake Buford.
  • Tuckerization: The Steam Noir coffee shop is next door to Swampy's Surf Shop. (Besides being a cartoon writer, Marsh is also an avid surfer.)
  • What Are Records?: Buford is amazed at the concept of "phone booths".
  • What Have We Ear?: Lawrence does this to the boys with a coin. Buford then somehow pulls another ear behind his ear.
