Recap / Peg Plus Cat S 1 E 21 The Slop Problem

Go To

The scene opens on the farm, with Peg raking leaves and Cat nearby. She tries to introduce herself and Cat but first switches their names, then calls them both Peg, and when she finally gets it right she explains that she is nervous. She then explains that her nervousness is due to anticipating a visit from the Teens, who she and Cat idolise.

The Teens show up, and are excited to be visiting a farm for the first time, so Peg and Cat act as tour guides and show them around. First, they arrive at the barn, where the Teens immediately take a shine to the animals and photograph them. However, when Peg suggests petting them, they seem grossed out at the prospect of touching them.

Peg then shows the Teens the 100 Chickens' chicken coop. They try to photograph them, too, but can't get a good photo through the wiring. So, Mora lets them out. Peg tells the Teens that the chickens are meant to stay inside the coop, but by that stage, they've already escaped. To make matters worse, the farmer is nearby and at risk of seeing them.

Peg asks the Teens for help rounding up the chickens, but they're still repulsed at the idea of touching animals. Luckily, their cell phones have an app that sends out robot hands that can pick the chickens up five at a time. Thus, they use the phones to pick up the chickens and put them back, singing as they do. With the crisis dealt with, Peg is about to sing Problem Solved, but the Teens want to play a recording of Ramone singing a remix of it instead. Eventually, Jessie does due to having the loudest phone.

They dance to the song, and so do the farm animals, but unfortunately they step in some mud and get all muddy, which is bad news as the farmer only just washed them that morning. Peg fills up some wooden tubs with soap and water and tries to get the Teens to help, but they don't want to risk getting dirty.

However, Peg puts her foot down, so they reluctantly help wash the animals. They have a bit of trouble though: a pig and cow are too big to fit in the tubs, and the sheep slips on some soap and lands in hay. Then, Tessa and Mora slip on the same soap and also land in hay. Peg points out that the sheep is now even dirtier, and makes a joke about the farmer "having a cow" if he sees them, then she overhears him outside talking to the Littlest Chicken.

She straightens things up and gets the animals into the correct-sized tubs. With the animals clean, Peg prepares to photograph the Teens with the animals, but the Littlest Chicken knocks over a bucket of slop, accidentally getting the animals dirty again. Unfortunately, the Teens absolutely refuse to help wash them this time around because the animals are even dirtier than before.

Peg freaks out (though, for a change, she doesn't say so) but the solution is the same ol' one about counting backwards from five. She gets inspired by seeing Cat asleep on the Teens' bathing suits and thinks that if the Teens get dirty, they could always go for a swim and get clean again.

So, they wash the animals, and the Teens actually enjoy getting dirty knowing that they can get clean again. The farmer shows up and the Teens and Peg change into their bathing suits and walk to the lake. Then, everybody takes a swim while singing.

This episode provides examples of

  • Accessory-Wearing Cartoon Animal:
    • In the Ramone video, the Pig is wearing a wig.
    • When everyone swims, Cat wears arm floaties.
  • Animal Lover:
    • Played with for the Teens. When the Teens first meet the animals, they instantly gush about how cute they are and take pictures. However, they express disgust at the idea of touching them.
    • Cat claims to "love touching animals".
  • Artistic License – Physics: When Peg fills up the tubs, she doesn't turn the hose off between them, so naturally the floor between the tubs should have gotten wet but it doesn't.
  • Astonishingly Appropriate Interruption: Peg says, "If any of [the 100 Chickens] get out, it really upsets...", then sees the farmer and yells, "The farmer!".
  • Big "NO!":
    • Peg shouts, "NO!" when she sees that the animals are dirty, and again when the sheep lands in the hay.
    • Cat shouts, "NO!" when he observes the Littlest Chicken about to knock over the bucket of mud.
  • Captain Obvious: When Tessa says that her volume goes up to thirteen, Mora adds that fourteen is more than thirteen and Jessie points out that fifteen is more than both.
  • Chekhov's Gun: At the beginning, the Teens mention that they plan on going swimming. Later, the swimming is a solution to the dirt problem.
  • Doomed New Clothes: Zigzagged for Tessa's shirt. She says that it is new and so that's why she washes the sheep, who's the least dirtiest animal. Later, she does get it dirty, but then it gets washed just fine.
  • Fake Faint:
    • Peg, who idolizes The Teens, pretends to faint to ham up how excited she is when they come over.
    • When the Teens compliment Peg and Cat, they take turns pretending to pass out.
  • Filthy Fun: When the Teens learn that they can get clean immediately after getting dirty, they actually enjoy getting dirty.
  • Furry Reminder: Cat sleeps in the daytime, curled up.
  • Half-Dressed Cartoon Animal: In the video of Ramone singing the Problem Solved song, Cat is seen wearing a sleeveless jacket and nothing else.
  • Mundane Made Awesome: When the Teens photograph the farm animals, Jessie boasts that he's texting and taking pictures at the same time.
  • Musical Chores:
    • The farmer spends a lot of this episode singing off-key about the farm work he's doing.
    • Peg, Cat, and the Teens sing while putting the 100 Chickens back.
    • They then sing while bathing the animals.
  • Musicalis Interruptus: Peg nearly sings, "Problem Solved" but the Teens interrupt and playing a recording of Ramone singing it instead.
  • Neat Freak: The Teens cringe and (initially) refuse to help wash the animals for fear of getting dirty. When they realise they can get clean again, however, they actually enjoy it.
  • Phoneaholic Teenager: The Teens take photos and text with their phones, and it causes trouble when Mora lets the chickens loose to get a better photo. However, it also solves the problems since the phones have robot hands to pick the chickens up.
  • Pun: Peg notes that if the farmer sees his animals dirty, he'd "have a cow".
  • Punctuated! For! Emphasis!: After Peg explains that the Teens are coming over, she and Cat say in unison, "Teens... are... so... cool!".
  • Slapstick:
    • At one point, Tessa and Mora both slip on some soap, get sent flying, and land in hay.
    • The sheep who previously slipped on the soap, flew, and landed in the same hay is later revealed to be a ewe by Peg.
  • Speak in Unison:
    • The Teens read out the title in unison, then they say in unison, "Slop?! Eewww!".
    • Peg and Cat enthuse about how "cool" teens are in unison.
    • Upon meeting the 100 Chickens, the twins say, "Chickens!" in unison.
  • Subverted Catchphrase: Peg doesn't say, "I am totally freaking out!" as usual. Instead, she says, "What am I about to start totally doing?", and when Mora suggests, "Freaking out?", she still doesn't say the catchphrase.
  • Teens Are Monsters: Inverted— Peg and Cat think very highly of teenagers.
  • Water Is Blue: The water that Peg washes the animals with appears blue.
