Recap / Parks and Recreation: "A Parks and Recreation Special"

Go To

The Parks and Rec gang are all holed up in their homes due to practicing social distancing during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Leslie, now working in Washington D.C., is trying to stay connected to everyone through video chatting.

Tropes

  • All Women Love Shoes: Donna is calling from inside her closet, which is full of different shoes.
  • Assurance Backfire: Andy as Johnny Karate is brought on to reassure kids that everything will be all right, but he gets sidetracked.
Andy: It might not be today, it might not be tomorrow, and it might not be next week. It might not be a year, or a hundred years, or a thousand years. It might never happen!
  • Big "WHAT?!": Bobby lets out one upon being told that a pandemic is in progress.
  • Call-Back: So many of these.
  • Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: If not showing up in any way for the final season or even in the Grand Finale episode "One Last Ride" (when many other even less prominent characters were brought back in some capacity) was the final nail in the coffin of Mark Brendanawicz being completely forgotten about after his departure in "Freddy Spaghetti", then his lack of an appearance or acknowledgment of existence in this reunion special could well be considered the shovel and dirt on top of it all.
  • Creepy Doll: When Joan's segment comes on, she is surrounded by several of these.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Ben has this realization about his claymation Cones of Dunshire movie shortly after coming up with it.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: Look at the user names and Gryzzl Points of the various callers. Ron has "ID Blocked" as his screen name, while April's screen name is "Satan's Niece". Donna is a Gryzzl Gold Member. And Garry somehow has a negative number of Gryzzl Points.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Nobody wants to be the one to video call Garry (although Donna, who's generally been the one who looks out for Garry, does do it, despite complaining a bit about it).
  • The Ghost: Diane (and her kids), Lucy, Gayle, and Joe are all mentioned to be social distancing with their spouses, but never make an appearance.
  • Go Mad from the Isolation:
    • A few characters are going stir-crazy from social distancing in their homes. Jean-Ralphio even made a commercial just to get people to call him.
    • Ben, due to the isolation while Leslie is at work in DC (and in part because of fumes from the cleaning supplies), has begun to revert to his typical boredom state, and decides to write a new claymation movie about the Cones of Dunshire.
  • Hopeless with Tech: Garry keeps activating face filters by mistake, making him look like a dog, a Juggalo, and the poop emoji. In the last scene, he's made himself into a baby.
  • Insane Troll Logic: Dennis Feinstein hawks his newest fragrance Miracle Cure, as being able to kill the novel coronavirus and any other virus. How do you know it works? "Every animal who has smelled or ingested it has died."
  • Late to the Realization: Bobby Newport introduces the special from his family's estate in Switzerland and has not kept up with the news, so the pandemic comes as a complete surprise to him.
  • Pet the Dog: Donna eventually agrees to call Garry, after everyone else refused to do it.
  • Real Life Writes the Plot: The episode was filmed from each actor's home, and the plot itself is based on the current COVID-19 Pandemic.
    • The writers had to explain why characters who are married (but whose actors are not in Real Life) are not together. Also, Tammy 2 was able to appear because Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally are married.
  • Reunion Show: The cast and crew got together for this special six years after the show's official Grand Finale.
  • Rummage Sale Reject: April dresses in whatever random clothing she finds in the attic.
  • Running Gag:
    • Ben once again reverts to his poor creative skills when he's bored, this time coming up with an idea for a new claymation movie.
    • Tammy 2 once again tries to insert herself into Ron's life, this time by camping out and breaking into his cabin (incidentally, similar to the scenarios Ron attempted to prepare Jeremy Jamm for in "Ron & Jammy") while he and Diane are out for a walk.
    • Joan Calamezzo's ridiculous behavior is once again on full display here.
    • One within the episode itself: Nobody wants to call Garry.
    • Tom coming up with ludicrous business ideas while bored.
  • Video Call Fail: Every time Garry (who is now mayor) is on a video call, he accidentally activates a face filter, making him look ridiculous.
