List of tropes applying to this episode:

  • Becoming the Mask: Tidd doesn't kill Said when he has the chance. It is clear he has become loyal to the faith.

  • Blatant Lies: Burr when he tells Keller he has no grudge against Allah.

  • Commonality Connection: Yood tries to bond with Hughes by appealing to the fact they are all cops.

  • Double Agent: Alvarez offers to be this for Morales, who refuses on the grounds giving any information to Glynn would be dumb of him.

  • Green-Eyed Monster: Mukada gets envious of Cloutier's popularity with the inmates.

  • Heel Realization: After he's convinced Beecher had no involvement in Hank's death, Vern backs out of his plan, assures him his family is safe, and even genuinely apologizes for having Gary killed.

  • Hero with Bad Publicity: Nancy's anger with Basil is partially based on his actions causing good and honest cops to get a bad rap.

  • I Gave My Word: Beecher refuses when Ryan asks him to drop out of the aging drug project based on this principle.

  • I Will Punish Your Friend for Your Failure: While thinking Beecher had Hank killed, the Aryans target his brother Angus, who has never done anything to them.

  • Jerkass Has a Point: Sister Pete doesn't dispute that McManus has his own reasons for trying to shut the age drug project down but she feels his arguments have merit.

  • Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal: Alvarez points out that he would never have been disloyal to El Norte if they didn't keep fucking him over. However, Burr still thinks he's untrustworthy because he turned on them.

  • Not Me This Time: Keller suggests they frame someone else for Hank's death but Beecher refuses to make someone else suffer for his sins.

  • Pet the Dog:
    • Despite his usual lack of sympathy for inmates Glynn decides to forgive Busmalis and let him be married after speaking to Rebadow.
    • Ryan has a rather sweet moment where he sings lullaby to Cyril.

  • Pragmatic Villainy: Burr won't work with Alvarez because he thinks it would be a risk to get in bed with him.

  • Self-Serving Memory: Vern seems to think he was looking out for Beecher when he stopped Adebisi from raping him, which itself is a blatant lie.

  • Thou Shalt Not Kill: Beecher is unwilling to kill Vern even when the man presents a serious threat to his family and would prefer to commit suicide.

  • The Rat: It is revealed Hill is in prison because Allah snitched on him.

  • Taking the Heat: In one of his few selfless acts, Keller lies about having Hank killed so Beecher will be saved. He had nothing to gain from it and it could have landed him on death row.

  • Villainous Friendship:
    • Hoyt freaks out when Wick collapses and yells for Murphy to come to help him.
    • It's revealed Tidd wanted to kill Said to avenge Adebisi who he really thought of as his friend.

  • Villain Has a Point: Robson is correct in his suspicion Beecher had Hank killed.

  • Would Hurt a Child: After Hank's body is found Schillinger declares his intent to have Beecher's entire family murdered, including his young daughter.
