Jamie, Claire, and Young Ian attempt to rescue Roger from the Mohawk only to learn that doing so will require a heavy sacrifice. Brianna prepares for the birth of her baby, holding out hope that Roger and her parents will return before the baby's arrival.

Tropes

  • Bait-and-Switch: At first, it appears the Mohawk accept Jamie's offer in exchange for Roger, but Young Ian reveals he offered himself instead.
  • The Exile: Chief Tehwahsehkwe banishes Wahkatiiosta after she disobeys his rule of not pursuing Otter Tooth's stone.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: Initially wary of Jamie, Claire, and Young Ian, Wahkatiiosta decides to help them rescue Roger if she can get Otter Tooth's stone. Unfortunately, she fails.
  • Fish out of Temporal Water: Otter Tooth went back in time to tell the Mohawk the dangers the colonists pose to Native Americans. He wouldn't stop preaching about how the Mohawk would be forgotten and the Iroquois Nation would be no more, until eventually they killed him to shut him up. Even after he died, his voice still followed the Mohawk warriors who killed him.
  • Forgiven, but Not Forgotten: Brianna tells Murtagh she came close as she can to forgiving Bonnet.
  • Gang Initiation Fight: Young Ian participates in running the gauntlet and, unlike Roger last episode, passes. The Mohawk accept him, making Young Ian very happy.
  • Ghostly Goals: Claire believes ghosts only exist to send a message and believes Otter Tooth intended to send a message to the Mohawk.
  • Innocently Insensitive: In the title card, Otter Tooth looks in disappointment at a child dressed as a Native American on Halloween.
  • Internal Reveal: Roger finds out Stephen Bonnet raped Brianna, and she is pregnant.
  • Mama's Baby, Papa's Maybe: Roger learns that Brianna is pregnant but she's not sure who the father is given how closely Bonnet's rape followed her consensual encounter with Roger.
  • Meadow Run: Brianna runs to Roger on the road after being apart for months. Roger then asks to see his son.
  • Mineral Macguffin: The Mohawk believe Otter Tooth's stone allows the one who possesses it to see Otter Tooth's ghost and know how the Mohawk's story will end.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Claire kept the stone she found with the skull. When she shows a child her scarf, she accidentally unveils the stone, stoking fear in the villagers and getting herself, Jamie and Young Ian banished.
  • No Sympathy: Jamie has very little patience for Roger's trauma, saying he'll be unworthy of Brianna if he can't immediately commit himself to marrying her, raising a child who may have been fathered by Stephen Bonnet, and staying two centuries in the past, and also blames him for the loss of Young Ian. It takes Claire to convince him to give Roger time and space to think before making a life-defining decision.
  • Price on Their Head: Tryon sends Redcoats to deliver a message to Jamie, demanding that he forms a militia to hunt the Regulators and kill Murtagh.
  • Slap-Slap-Kiss: Murtagh and Jocasta argue with each other, ending with Jocasta tossing her drink in Murtagh's face. The scene cuts to the next morning with Murtagh in Jocasta's bed.
  • So Much for Stealth: As Roger's rescue team quietly leaves with him, Satehoronies notices them and shoots a gun to warn the rest of the village.
  • Take Me Instead: Jamie offers to trade himself for Roger's release from captivity. When the Mohawk accept the offer, Young Ian offers himself in Jamie's place, so Jamie and Claire can return to Brianna with Roger.
  • Talk to the Fist: Still suffering from his trauma, Roger punches Jamie after being saved. Jamie lets Roger punch him repeatedly as payback for beating him and selling him to the Mohawk.
  • Terrifying Rescuer: After Roger's traumatizing experience with Jamie and Young Ian, he sees Jamie thinking he is here to hurt him.
  • Thwarted Escape: Jamie, Claire, Young Ian and their Mohawk allies fail to save Roger. He's only rescued when Young Ian takes his place.
  • Tranquil Fury: Wahkatiiosta calmly tells Jamie and Claire she and her warriors can overtake them if they don't give them the stone.
  • Twisted Ankle: When Claire tries to rescue Roger, she holds on to him since he is still injured.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Although Otter Tooth intended to warn the Mohawk of the injustices Native Americans will face from colonists, his actions, such as scalping white men, were too extreme for the Mohawk, and he was soon banished.
  • Woman Scorned: When told that Brianna sent her parents to rescue him, Roger sheds relieved tears. He admits that he had thought she might have had told them terrible things so that they would turn on him, the savage beating and being sold into slavery seeming quite extreme even for a woman of her temper.
