Go To

Haley confronts Brooke regarding the stolen calculus test. Meanwhile, Lucas and Peyton consider taking their relationship to the next level. Peyton and Brooke grow closer. And, in Deb's absence, Nathan throws a senior party at the Scott house, where a sex tape from Nathan's past surfaces.

Contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Blatant Lies: Lucas tells Peyton that he loaned Glenda a copy of The Great Gatsby after she asks to speak to him about “chapter ten” - as Peyton later reminds Lucas, Gatsby doesn’t have that many chapters.
  • Call-Back:
  • The Dog Bites Back: After getting fired from the Tutor Center because of Rachel, Haley proceeds to slap her and kick her out of the party.
  • The Farmer and the Viper: Haley is fired from the Tutor Center as a result of Rachel stealing exams, despite Haley not being involved in the theft.
  • Gilligan Cut: Nathan recruits Mouth and Skills to help clear out all of Deb’s hidden stashes of alcohol at home before she returns from rehab, with Mouth sceptical that they’ll find much; one cut later, the kitchen counter is completely covered in bottles.
  • Internal Reveal: Lucas tells Peyton that he’s writing a novel, and that she’s part of it.
  • Interrupted Intimacy:
    • Brooke walks in on Lucas and Peyton making out in his bedroom.
    • Skills walks in on Mouth and Shelley in bed together, after having sex.
    • Lucas and Peyton try to ignore the commotion going on outside as they attempt to have sex, but are finally interrupted when someone shouts that there’s a sex tape of Nathan and Peyton playing downstairs.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Rachel is expelled from Tree Hill High for stealing exams. She’s also slapped and kicked out of the party by Haley for getting her fired from the Tutor Center.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Rachel and Brooke have one when Principal Turner tells their class that because someone stole a calculus exam, the entire class has to take a pop quiz.
    • Peyton is appropriately mortified when she hears that a sex tape of Nathan and herself is playing downstairs, and tries to force he way through the onlooking crowd to shut it off.
  • Pregnant Badass: Haley slaps Rachel and kicks her out of the party after finding out that she stole the exams, and makes it clear that the only reason she isn’t kicking Rachel’s ass is because of her pregnancy.
  • The Reveal: Brooke and Nathan made a sex tape at some point in the past.
  • Sex for Services: Peyton invokes the trope whilst trying to get Lucas to let her read his novel.
Peyton: Well, what about me? I can be impartial.
    Lucas: I don't think so.
    Peyton: Why?!
    Lucas: Because you're in it.
[Beat as Peyton realises what Lucas just said.]
Peyton: Give me that book right now.
    Lucas: No way.
    Peyton: Please!
    Lucas: It's not ready.
Peyton: Pretty please with… me on top?
  • Shout-Out:
    • Lucas initially tells Peyton that he loaned Glenda a copy of The Great Gatsby rather than tell Peyton about his novel.
    • Peyton teases Lucas by describing the goth makeover Glenda gave him in the previous episode as being similar to Fall Out Boy.
    • Brooke is approached by Victoria’s Secret about franchising Clothes Over Bro’s.
    • Peyton winds up with a copy of The National’s album wedged into her back as she makes out with Lucas.
    • As Nathan tells Haley about the party he’s throwing as they walk up to Deb’s house, Mouth and Skills open the front and scream "Whassup?!" at them, referencing the popular Budweiser advertising campaign of a few years prior.
  • Spotting the Thread:
    • Peyton immediately realises Lucas didn't lend Glenda a copy of The Great Gatsby as he claimed, because Glenda asked Lucas about "Chapter 10" and Gatsby doesn't have that many chapters.
    • Dan confronts Lucas about not taking his HCM medication during the State Championship game, pointing out that he takes the same pills so he knows how they affect his body.
    • Haley confronts Brooke about the stolen calculus exams, pointing out how Brooke went from failing the class to suddenly receiving an A.
  • Tempting Fate:
    • Lucas tries to convince Peyton that she doesn’t need to worry about someone walking in on them, only for Brooke to interrupt.
    • Nathan telling Brooke that no-one’s going to know about them hooking up… on the sex tape that is currently being played on TV at a party in front of their entire senior class.
  • Their First Time:
    • Mouth loses his virginity to Shelley.
    • Averted with Lucas and Peyton - they head into a bedroom with the intent of doing so, but are interrupted when someone announces that there’s a Nathan and Peyton sex tape playing downstairs.
  • Time to Move: Nathan and Haley decide to move out of the apartment, and into Deb’s home, citing the cheaper cost of living and being able to make sure Deb remains sober after rehab.
  • Titled After the Song: The episode title is taken from the song "Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers" by The National.
  • Wham Shot: The reveal that Peyton isn’t the girl in the sex tape with Nathan, but Brooke is.
