When Chimney is involved in a near-fatal car accident, the 118 must pull together to save him. Athena must deal with the aftermath of May’s suicide attempt.

Tropes featured in the episode:

  • Birthday Party Goes Wrong: The 118 are called out to a birthday party and involves a jumping castle that has broken free of the pegs holding it down and high wind - the jumping castle is then blown over and taken away with the wind before crashing into the side of a hill, with the birthday boy, two of his friends and his father inside. The father is thrown from the castle as it is airborne.
  • Berserk Button: An annoyed Chimney, mentions to Bobby that even though they’ve worked together for a long time, the team has never met his wife or kids. Bobby snaps and yells at Chimney that he’s living a lie, he lets Tatiana manipulate him and pretends to be someone he’s not, making up stories to impress Tatiana.
  • Beware the Nice Ones:
    • Just because he’s the easy going captain, doesn’t mean Bobby is just going to let you walk all over him. He gives Chimney a much needed reality check about his relationship.
    • After receiving a call involving a group of Mexican refugees that were left behind and locked in the back of a truck in the summer heat, when Hen sees the owner of the truck in the crowd, she snaps and tackles the man to the ground, performing a citizen's arrest.
  • Blatant Lies: Chimney asks Buck how his car looks after his crash, Buck tells him that he can probably buff most of it out, cut to the car completely crumpled.
  • Commitment Issues: One of the reasons Tatiana gives Chimney to refuse his proposal, saying she cheated on her former fiancé a week before their week and wants to really make sure that Chimney and her are right for each other.
  • CPR: Clean, Pretty, Reliable: Buck performs CPR on an unconscious child
  • Driven to Suicide: After getting bullied at school, May attempts to take her own life via taking the rest of her mother’s leftover pain medication.
  • The Dutiful Son: Abby’s brother says she drew the short straw with having to look after their sick mother, due to being single with no kids, but Abby believes it's the right thing to do and refuses to even consider putting their mother into a care home.
  • Eagle-Eye Detection: Having seen his driver’s license, Hen is able to pick out the driver that left Mexican immigrants locked in the back of his truck, from within a crowd and sit on him before a cop can attend the scene.
  • Facial Horror: Chimney has a piece of rebar stuck through the middle of his forehead.
  • Friendless Background: May says, along with the bullying, that she has no friends any more and that contributed to her suicide attempt. Her only friend had left her to join her bully’s group.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Chimney gets jealous of Buck that he is never allowed to do any of the fun parts in rescues, like rappel down the cliff to save the children in the jumping castle, instead Chimney gets stuck meaning the winch up top.
  • Immediate Sequel: After the cold opening, the episode picks up with Athena calling 9-1-1 for May’s apparent overdose.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Chimney is skewered through the head by a piece of rebar and put into a coma.
  • Major Injury Underreaction: Due to how the rebar has gone through Chimney’s brain, he is unable to feel it or see it. So he doesn’t understand why he can’t move his head, it’s only when Bobby shows him a video of his injury, he begins to freak out.
  • Near-Death Experience: An upset Chimney crashes his car and gets a piece of rebar through his skull.
  • Offscreen Breakup: Tatiana breaks up with Chimney while he is unconscious in a coma, telling Bobby she doesn’t love him any more and refuses to even see him in the hospital. We don’t see the break up, but we also don’t see Tatiana again.
  • Rejected Marriage Proposal: Tatiana rejects Chimney proposal, saying that she’s not ready to settle down yet.
  • Social Services Does Not Exist: Averted May must go through an independent assessment protocol by CPS to determine why she tried to commit suicide, and to see if she is at risk to try it again. Athena and Micheal are not allowed to speak alone with May until after the assessment to determine if they had anything to do with her attempt. May is then put on a 24hr watch and would be evaluated the next morning, the evaluation could take a few days and May could be transferred to a facility in the meantime.
  • Smash to Black: As soon as Chimney car is rear ended, the scene cuts to black.
  • The Stakeout: Athena is seen staking out May’s highschool, in search of the girls that bullied her daughter.
  • Standard Bleeding Spots: After getting thrown from the airborne jumping castle, the father has a bleeding head wound and nose.
  • Suicide by Pills: May attempted this due to bullying but wasn’t successful.
  • Thrill Seeker: Chimney’s girlfriend, Tatiana, is this. She loves to hear all about Chimney’s firefighter stories, it really gets her in the mood.
