TK moves in with Carlos; Grace suffers from the after effects of the accident; Owen grapples with depression.

Tropes in this episode:

  • Bloody Horror: When one of the sweet cream vendors gets her arm stuck in the soft serve machine, her blood mixes with the ice cream in both the machine and over the prepped cup.
  • Caught on Tape: On seeing the lacrosse group unsympathetically mocking the ice cream owners and filming the girl’s terror and pain, Marjan decides to film the group’s bullying in turn. She then confronts them and lets them know that it’s been uploaded as an Instagram story, much to their shock.
  • *Crack!* "Ow, My Back!": Grace throws her car keys in with her groceries, which end up on the floor of her car. When trying to reach for them, the effort causes her to throw out her back. It leaves her incapacitated for about six hours.
  • Dance Party Ending: At the end of the episode, Owen arranges a neighborhood party to celebrate a boy’s birthday and recent settling-in with help from the two sweet cream vendors.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: Despite Judd’s concern, and her clearly being in pain, Grace insists on independently practicing her mobility and going shopping. She then has to concede and call Tommy for help when she throws out her back trying to retrieve her car keys.
  • Double Entendre: TK jokes about Carlos being “handy”, which makes the latter blush.
  • Drunken Montage: As Mateo moves into his captain’s house, Owen persuades Mateo to have tequila with him. Three drinks later, they’re partying hard and listening to what Owen calls “yacht rock” music; hours later, they’re both slumped on the couch.
  • Empty Nest: Two examples with Owen (feeling lonely and adrift after TK and Gwyn move out) and Mateo (after one of his roommates accidentally causes a gas leak that blows up their shared home). Owen resolves this by taking in Mateo as a roommate.
  • First-Name Basis: Owen insists that Carlos call him by his first name when they’re off the job.
  • Friendless Background:
  • In Vino Veritas: While getting drunk together, Mateo and Owen admit to their being bummed about their living situations. It’s when Owen starts cynically waxing philosophical and starting to refer to his own loneliness that Mateo clocks that the former’s emotional health takes a higher priority.
  • Jerkass / Lethally Stupid: Mateo’s roommates aren’t exactly good to him, lacking consideration for his post-shift fatigue and tending not to take him seriously. It comes to a head when one of his roommates improperly installs a portable stove into the gas line for their main stove, accidentally causing a leak, and another for leaving incense to burn not too far from the leak site; this costs everyone a place to live.
  • Jerk Jock: A group of them harasses one of the sweet cream employees for free treats, who only puts up with them since he sees them as “friends”. When his coworker gets her arm trapped in the machine, they also exhibit complete Lack of Empathy for her distress, even as Owen and the paramedics work on the machine and get her free.
  • Saying Too Much: Mateo accidentally blabs about Owen’s possible depression over an open mic line.
  • Staging an Intervention: After hearing from Mateo about Owen’s depression and his procrastination of scheduling his cancer surgery, TK gathers the 126 and Carlos at his house so he can confront both issues. Judd outright tells Owen he’s depressed, Marjan praises Owen for making her feel respected and included in the crew, and TK correctly figures that his father is running out of excuses to not go through with the surgery.
  • Stepford Smiler: Owen tries to keep up his upbeat nature despite the sudden changes of TK moving out and Mateo moving in. Once Mateo reveals the details of their drunk conversation, though, none of the 126 buys their captain’s avoidances and insistence to the contrary.
  • With Friends Like These...: The main theme of the episode.
