Tropes

  • A Day in the Limelight: Judd and Grace this time, focusing on their love story.
  • Black Gal on White Guy Drama: Downplayed and defied. Benjamin, Grace’s father, not-so-subtly lets Judd know he disapproves of their relationship not only because of his skin color or incompatible status, but because he doesn’t consider Judd in general good enough for Grace and doesn’t want anything keeping her from attending Georgetown University. Grace, on the other hand, couldn’t care less about those factors even after Judd tries to break up with her.
  • Blatant Lies: Judd decides to tell Grace to her face that he doesn’t love her, even when neither of them believe it.
  • Drunk Driver: Judd swerves out of the path of one, accidentally steering his truck off the bridge and into the river.
  • Flashbacks: The main focus of the story is told in flashbacks of how Judd and Grace fell in love:
    • 1995: Judd and his friend Cal go for a joyride that turns into a race with another young driver. Cal floors the gas pedal against Judd’s protests, causing their car to swerve into a tree; Judd survives, but Cal doesn't.
    • 2012: The 126 takes a Bible study group on a tour of the firehouse. After the tour, one of the chaperones gives a "crisis hotline" card to Judd. Almost immediately, they respond to an elderly woman who has fallen. The woman recognizes Judd and yells at him to stay away. She's Cal's mother.
    • 2013: Judd calls the hotline and meets Grace. She advises him to make amends with Cal's mother.
    • Judd starts doing yardwork around his old friend's house and calls Grace whenever he can. Eventually Cal's mother lets him into the house for a drink, and they reconcile.
    • Judd contines to call for Grace until he learns she's stopped volunteering at the hotline. One day, he visits a club with Tommy when he recognizes Grace's voice coming from one of the girls there. Tommy gives him the push to talk to Grace and the future couple officially meets face to face.
    • Judd gets his Psalm tattoo after reluctantly breaking up with Grace at her father’s behest.
    • Tommy gives birth to her twins, and Judd heads to the hospital where he encounters Grace again, who is studying to be a 911 operator. They rekindle their relationship.
  • Get Out!: In 2012, Cal’s mother recognizes Judd and makes it clear she’s still grieving her son’s loss and blaming Judd for it.
  • I Will Tear Your Arms Off: Downplayed; Judd threatens to crush the driver’s wrist if he tries to call for help and doesn’t let go until Owen and Benjamin inform him that Grace is awake.
  • Tranquil Fury: Judd enters this temporarily when confronting the driver in his hospital room.
  • Turn the Other Cheek: This is part of Grace’s advice to Judd to make peace with Cal’s mother.
  • Out of Focus: The rest of the cast appears together in the hospital, while Judd and Grace recover.
  • Wham Line: The doctor telling "both" patients are fine, revealing Grace is pregnant.
