Recap / My Little Pony: Make Your Mark: S2 E6 "The Traditional Unicorn Sleep-Over"

Go To

Misty is sent to infiltrate the Brighthouse to steal Sunny's magic lantern, and winds up roped into Izzy's sleepover.

Tropes:

  • Acting Unnatural: Misty has no idea how to behave as a Bridlewood unicorn, so she has no knowledge of traditional unicorn customs. Zipp is quick to notice she's just as lost as the rest of them are, and even goads Misty into joining Izzy in a traditional song to get her to slip up.
  • Actually Pretty Funny: When the others mangle the lyrics of an old unicorn song, Izzy admits that the new lyrics are really funny.
  • Ambiguously Human: Or equine in this case. Misty mentions in her story that the alicorn queen (Opaline) wasn't a pony at all. Whether or not this leans into Opaline's skewed version of how the racial divide happened or if Misty was just trying to hype up her adoptive mother is unclear.
  • Art Shift: Sunny and Misty tell different versions of how the pony races were divided, which are presented in a paper-like art style instead of the show's CGI.
  • Bait the Dog: Opaline commends Misty for her Evil Laugh... then coldly tells her not to be a "showoff".
  • Blatant Lies: Sunny wakes Pipp up so Izzy's sleepover can continue, and Pipp lamely tries to claim she isn't tired while yawning.
  • Call-Back:
    • One of the things Izzy says she misses about Bridlewood is the "jinxies".
    • Misty's story, while obviously biased towards Opaline, is consistent with Twilight's message from the second episode.
  • The Cameo: Sprout briefly appears while Izzy is chasing Sparky around Maretime Bay.
  • Commonality Connection: When Misty lies that she wanted to use the lift to get a view of Maretime Bay from up high, Zipp admits that she likes such views herself.
  • Cover Identity Anomaly: Misty tries to pass herself off as just another Bridlewood unicorn. However, her lack of knowledge regarding unicorn traditions quickly makes Zipp suspicious.
  • Evil-Detecting Dog: Sparky growls at Misty when they first meet. This is the first thing that makes Zipp suspicious of Misty.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Misty somehow manages to overlook Sunny's magic lantern three times while she's up in the group's shared bedroom. First she misses it while searching Sunny's area, then she doesn't realize that it's casting all the tree shadows after Sunny and Pipp redesign Izzy's area, and finally she doesn't notice it a few feet away from her on the floor when she wakes up to call Opaline at the end.
  • Fish out of Water: Misty is the only non-Bridlewood unicorn featured on the show to date, so she's as puzzled by Izzy's unicorn traditions as the rest of Sunny's friends are.
  • Line-of-Sight Name: When Izzy invites Misty to her "traditional unicorn sleepover", she asks for her last name. She hastily says "Brighthouse" because she's standing right in front of it, to the other ponies' confusion, so she settles on "Brightdawn" instead after looking at the stained-glass images on it.
  • Long List: Izzy goes into an exhaustive list of everything she misses about Bridlewood, long enough for her friends to set up something to remind her of home while she's still talking.
  • Motor Mouth: Izzy has shown hints of this in the past, but she veers hard into it here.
  • Mundane Luxury: Misty is overjoyed by ponycorn (popcorn), probably because it's the first truly nice thing she's ever eaten.
  • Mythology Gag: One of the activities for the sleep-over involves Glowpaz, a type of gemstone which was featured in the Friendship is Magic episode "Daring Done?"
  • Noodle Incident: Sunny mentions in her story that the "shot heard around the world" for the pony races' feud was that a unicorn harmed an earth pony, but nothing specific about that is elaborated on.
  • Offscreen Teleportation: Misty awkwardly tries to back away from the enthusiastic Izzy... only to find Izzy standing right behind her.
  • Out of Focus: Hitch and Sparky depart from the episode early on, Hitch needing to put Sparky to bed for the night.
  • Properly Paranoid: Zipp quickly becomes suspicious of Misty's lack of knowledge on unicorn traditions, and of her attempt to get in the lift leading to the Unity Crystals.
  • Reading Tea Leaves: Another sleep-over activity revolves around reading tea leaves. Misty messes up by drinking the tea, leaves and all.
  • Sequel Hook: Zipp wakes up while Misty contacts Opaline, and overhears Misty's part of the conversation, leading her to become even more suspicious of the mysterious unicorn.
  • Shout-Out: The ponies watch Trotting Hill, the pony version of Notting Hill.
"Don't you see, Salty? I'm just a unicorn, standing in front of another unicorn, asking him to share with her."
