  • Accomplice by Inaction: Rei, Fyumi, and Natsuo all felt like they have failed Toya because they didn't do enough to talk some sense in him or confronted Enji, and they feel they should share the blame even though he was the main cause of the family's rift.
  • Arc Words: Toya repeatedly says "Look at me", begging for his father's attention as he tried to be the Hero Enji always wanted him to be. The start of the episode has Dabi say the same thing, telling his family to see him as the Villain he has now become.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: Hawks and Best Jeanist want to join Endeavor and the Todoroki family to stop Dabi and the remnants of the PFL, but Hawks wants to figure out one burning question: What is One for All? Endeavor remembers Deku telling him Shigaraki is targeting the boy at Jaku City and believes he may have something to do with it.
  • Arranged Marriage: "Quirk Marriage" is explored here, which allows two different users to wed with the primary purpose of giving birth to a child with a more powerful Quirk of their own; whether a stronger version from either side of the family or a fusion of the two. Enji had desired this purpose to have a child with ice and fire powers for balance, which eventually led to their forth child Shoto, and Rei agrees for financial support of her family. The questionable ethics behind these specific arrangements deemed the concept itself "taboo" in modern times.
  • Ask a Stupid Question...: The first question Enji asks in his hospital bed is if Rei is alright. She coldly responds that she is obviously not, after watching a broadcast of a villain who claims to be their long-lost son.
  • As You Know: After talking to the Todorokis about their dramatic past, Hawks gives Endeavor the rundown of everything that happened while he recovered. To review, the remnants of the League of Villains and Paranormal Liberation Front, along with several active Nomus are still at large, the Hero Public Safety Commission is all but defunct so there is no way to call upon international Heroes, seven (actually six) prisons worth of Villains are now free and currently causing trouble, and citizens have taken up arms to defend themselves and make things worse because they lost faith in Heroes. At the same time, many Heroes and Agencies themselves have quit under pressure; all in the span of just two days.
  • Big Damn Reunion: For the first time in years, the entire Todoroki family reunites; this includes Enji, Shoto, Fyumi, Natsu, and especially Rei. Sadly, it is not under pleasant circumstances as they have to talk about Dabi, the man formerly known as Toya Todoroki.
  • Bittersweet Ending: The Todoroki family all share the blame for Toya's Start of Darkness to Dabi and vow to back Endeavor and Shoto up for their inevitable confrontation though. Rei acknowledges Shoto as the "family's Hero" for surviving their family drama and becoming a better person thanks to his friends in U.A. Hawks and Best Jeanist vow to team up with him to handle the crisis involving the PLF and escaped Villains to further ease the burden. Meanwhile, more of the U.A. students are recovering. However, Midoriya remains in a coma, though All Might senses he is actually talking with the other torch bearers within.
  • But Thou Must!: Despite Endeavor's previous reservations in fighting Dabi, Shoto and the rest of the family tells him there is no other option since he unintentionally set him down this path, but at least he won't have to do it alone since they all share the blame. Perhaps just as serious, he remains Japan's No. 1 Hero, so he has to fight on regardless of what the public currently thinks of him.
  • Cain and Abel: Toya tries to burn the newborn baby Shoto out of anger when he sees that Enji is paying more attention to the latter. Enji later decides to keep Shoto away.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Toya and Rei's stories are fully explained here.
    • Toya's proverbial fire was lit by his father and was so desperate for his attention when it turns to Shoto, he eventually bursts into flames and was thought to have died that day. Sometime after, Dabi was born.
    • Rei was put in an arranged "Quirk Marriage" with Enji to support her family, but it led to the stress of birthing the perfect child and Enji's abuse, and its breaking point caused her to accidentally scar Shoto and be admitted to a clinic. It also explains why Shoto would go on to resent his father and fire power until the UA Sports Festival.
  • Did Not See That Coming: Enji had always saw Rei as delicate and reserved, so he never expected her to actually show up and bravely confront him after the struggles they endured and how he treated her.
  • Domestic Abuse: The backstory doesn't sugarcoat Enji's aggression towards his wife. It's not completely violent or frequent, but it was only initially centered around Toya, which he demands she handle alone while he raises Shoto. Whatever physical abuse he did inflict on her supposedly paled in comparison to the emotional variant that soon led to her breakdown.
  • Easily Forgiven: Subverted. Even after promising to stand together, Natsuo says that the family will only do so until Dabi is dealt with. It is another clear reminder from him that some wounds won't heal so easily, as he promised never to forgive their father.
  • Flashback Episode: The full details of the turbulent story between Enji, Rei, and Toya are revealed.
  • Foil: Hawks never expected Shoto to come from an abusive home like him, and he compliments the boy being able to confront and make peace with his parents while he simply turned his back on his own.
  • Foregone Conclusion: The start of the episode has Enji and Rei somewhat supporting each other when their Arranged marriage was set, but it's clear from other flashbacks and earlier episodes of the series that it didn't last long.
  • Foreshadowing: According to Hawks, other Heroes from all over the world are eager to assist in the Japan crisis but, without the Safety Commission, the process is at a standstill at best. At least one hero will heed the call in the near future.note
  • He-Man Woman Hater: [Young] Toya considers his mother and sister to be "useless" in the family, the former of which he accuses of being too complicit to do anything.
  • It's All My Fault: There is no question that Enji did nothing to prevent Toya's enventual path to become Dabi, and he soon admits that, but the rest of the family take a bit of the blame in their own way because they felt they didn't do enough to prevent that either, either by calming down Toya or confronting Enji about his abuse or neglect. Shoto, meanwhile, had to endure it all and still managed to be a better person, thanks to Midoriya and his other classmates.
  • I've Come Too Far:
    • After learning that Toya will continue to burn himself because of his weak constitution, Enji attempted to convince his firstborn to give up his dreams of being a Hero, despite initially pushing him to follow in his footsteps. Unfortunately, Toya believes that his father had given up on him and tries to improve even if it's behind his back.
    • Enji expresses hindsight that Toya's "death" might have been a sign that he should have hung up his costume long time ago. He claims that with Shoto's progress, however, he couldn't just turn back at that point.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Toya shoots down his mother's attempts to stop his training, saying that she is too complicit to do so and he was initially born from an Arranged Marriage to support her family. Rei later admits to this helplessness, especially since he and Enji share the same ambition.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Enji had decided to exclusively train and isolate Shoto while he pushed Rei into taking care of the other kids, including Toya. Had he tried to be a better parent and husband, Rei wouldn't have suffered a mental breakdown, and Shoto and Natsuo wouldn't have hated him. Toya "dying" and being reborn as Dabi would have been inevitable, but there also would have been a chance that he didn't.
  • Nightmare Face: Enji's rage towards Rei when he learns Toya was still training behind his back was the catalyst of her breakdown from his eyes alone. A shot of him up close makes him look like a demon possessed, and it is little wonder why she was so terrified.
  • Once More, with Clarity:
    • The flashback explains exactly why Enji had isolated Shoto from the rest of the family and how Toya "died".
    • Rei's trauma stemmed from Toya resenting her, then Enji's anger. One look at Shoto's face that fateful day led to her finally snapping and tossing boiling water at him, leading to his scar. She previously said that Shoto looked too much like her husband.
  • Poor Communication Kills: In a more symbolic sense; it is implied Enji simply told Toya to give up in following in his footsteps and pursue another career, not once explaining why. This would lead to the family falling apart and explain why Enji previously said he "killed" his oldest son due to his negligence.
  • Pose of Supplication: Rei does this as an apology to Hawks for Dabi/Toya's actions but, while he is a concern, Hawks assures her this isn't necessarily.
  • The Reveal: Toya/Dabi was the firstborn of Enji and Rei, and was supposed to have a fusion of their fire and ice Quirks to negate each other's weaknesses. Instead, he only has a more powerful version of Hellfire, which later became Blueflame. He has his mother's cold resistance, but it only makes him even more susceptible to his own burns.
  • Running Gag: Like Iida, Best Jeanist decides to call a restrained Bakugo by his Hero name note .
  • Sanity Slippage: Rei's trauma from Enji and Toya lead to her fateful snap that had her accidentally scar Shoto with boiling water. According to her, she was left even more broken when she heard Toya "died" after she was sent to a clinic.
  • Start of Darkness: All Toya wanted to do was please his father Enji/Endeavor by striving to become a Hero he envisioned him to be, but the more the Pro distanced himself from him to train Shoto, the more desperate he becomes. Following his "death" when he lost control of his Quirk, Toya became Dabi and now plans to do everything he can to destroy his father and everything he stands for.
  • Stepford Smiler: Rei had struggled to put on a brave face for the sake of her marriage. The longer she had to deal with Enji and an over-ambitious Toya, the more that smile faded.
  • The Unreveal:
    • Fuyumi and Natsu's Quirk have yet to be revealed but Enji felt like they weren't what he was looking for, which led to Shoto being born sometime after. Their white-dominant hair implies that they only inherited their mother's ice Quirk.
    • Toya attempted to take his frustrations out on a baby Shoto, but it's never shown how he was stopped. It's only hinted that Enji suffered a slight burn from the incident.
    • Enji only saw a charred jawbone remaining of Toya in his "death", but he returns years later as Dabi. How he survived and returned is another story for the future.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Before Dabi became who he is, Toya was eager and excited to follow in Enji's footsteps. When Shoto came into the picture, his determination and eventual desperation for his father's attention turned to resentment towards his brother. After being reborn as Dabi, it turns to a literal burning hatred to them both.
