Hawks: Those who can fly, should fly. There's no need to be confined to the ground.

"Operation New Improv Moves" is the fifth episode of My Hero Academia's fifth season and the 93rd episode of the series overall.

After the first round of Class A vs Class B concludes with Class A's victory, all of the students that participated in the battle reflect on their mistakes and what they've learned from the fight. Then the second round begins after both Kendo and Kuroiro declare Yaoyorozu and Tokoyami their rivals, respectively. Tokoyami's internship under Hawks is also seen in a flashback in between the fight. Tokoyami shows off his new move, "Dark Fallen Angel", and Class B's plan A ends in failure.

Tropes in this episode:

  • Batman Gambit: Kuroiro attracts Tokoyami with a declaration of rivalry, knowing that this would make Tokoyami think that the battle would become a one-on-one fight and focus on defending himself. Kuroiro then uses this single-minded focus of Tokoyami as a distraction to attack his teammates.
  • The Coats Are Off: Tokoyami takes his cape off when confronting Kuroiro to mean it's really Serious Business but no ass-kicking takes place as Kuroiro continues hiding in the shadows.
  • Not Quite Flight: Tokoyami reveals his new move, "Dark Fallen Angel", a technique that he developed during his internship with Hawks, where he uses Dark Shadow's ability to levitate to have Dark Shadow carry him and make him fly. This technique helps him take Aoyama back from Kuroiro, who was moving from one pipe to another at great speed.
  • Orbital Shot: Happens to show that team 1-A is in a pinch because of their inability to pinpoint Kuroiro's exact location and how he took them by surprise.
  • The Rival:
    • Kendo considers Yaoyorozu this, especially since people love to lump them together due to their similarities, however Kendo is determined to prove herself in this battle. Yaoyorozu accepts her fight declaration and they form a Friendly Rivalry.
    • Played With in Kuroiro's case. He establishes the fact that he and Tokoyami are "fated rivals" several times, though it's mostly a mind trick on his part to confuse Tokoyami. He makes Tokoyami think he's after him and even gets him to an inconvenient spot just to snatch Aoyama instead.
  • Time for Plan B: How the episode ends; team 1-B announces the start of plan B after the first one fails as they foresaw that this might happen from the beginning.
  • Throwing Down the Gauntlet:
    • Kendo challenges Yaoyorozu to a fight whom that latter accepts.
    • Kuroiro attempts to do this with Tokoyami, who also accepts, though it turns out to be a bluff to throw Tokoyami off.
