Recap / Murdoch Mysteries S 2 E 8 I Murdoch

Go To

Murdoch faces spies and a robotic super weapon as he searches for a lost boy.

Tropes:

  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: At the end of the episode Hammerton frantically tries to surrender himself to the Toronto cops and begs not to let Meyers take him as he's dragged away, either to be executed or to rebuild a war machine under threat of execution.
  • Conspicuously Public Assassination: The first murder is clearly inspired by the real-life assassination of Georgi Markov, although the deadly pellet is injected by a "blind" man's cane rather than an umbrella, and filled with a fast-acting poison (prussic acid aka cyanide) rather than a slow one (ricin).
  • Corrupt Corporate Executive: Martin Hammerton shows little concern about the idea of building machines to make his employees obsolete, and is trying to bilk multiple governments with a fake robot, as well as almost certainly being the killer.
  • Good Cannot Comprehend Evil: For a very loose definition of good. Meyers finds the idea of war-profiteering alien and unsavory.
  • I, Noun: The episode's title is "I, Murdoch".
  • Impact Silhouette: A rare non-cartoon example; The automaton, driven by young Alwin, creates a giant, man-shaped hole in the wall by breaking out of a warehouse.
  • Karma Houdini: The blind assassin is never caught.
  • Mirror Character: Meyers and the Prussian agent he spreads warnings about. The two are even revealed to be on a first name basis once they don't suspect each other anymore.
  • No, You: Meyers and Bomgaarts volley "Liar!" back and forth when they're brought into the same room.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: The episode's title is a play on I, Robot.
  • Robot Soldier: The mysterious "giant silver knight". At least, that's what the Canadian and Prussian governments think it is. It's actually a costume.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Subverted. Bomgaarts holds Murdoch at gunpoint and upon questioning him for information about the case declares that Murdoch is of no further use to him, but merely chloroforms him.
