Recap / Murder She Wrote S 6 E 14 How To Make A Killing Without Really Trying

Go To

Jessica arrives in New York for an appointment with her stockbroker Phillip Royce. However, Royce quickly turns up dead in his apartment and the police fix on Jessica's new friend Norma as the primary suspect for the murder and thousands of dollars of embezzled money.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Almighty Janitor: Norma Pulaski, Royce's secretary, actually does the brokerage work while her boss fools around with women and plays golf. Unfortunately, it gets deconstructed in that a secretary isn't supposed to do that and she loses her job because of it.
  • Golf Clubbing: The Victim of the Week, Phillip Royce, got brained with his own putter.
  • Hypocritical Humor: While interrogating Sid Hooper, Lt. Moynihan declares he knew a major broker had to have embezzled the money rather than a secretary and her boyfriend. Jessica drily tells him she's sure Norma and Rudy will be glad to hear it.
  • Ironic Echo Cut: Jessica tells an officer at the scene that she had a breakfast appointment with Royce. Cut to the inside, where Lt. Monyihan tells Jessica Royce will never have breakfast again.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Jessica accidentally gets Norma in further trouble when she tells the investigating officer (while the CEO is around) that it seemed as though Norma actually did the work at the company. Mr. Ashcroft chastises her for doing things secretaries aren't supposed to do and fires her.
  • Office Golf: Royce, who had more interest in golf than business, was practicing his putting in his apartment when his infuriated attacker grabbed his putter and smashed him over the head with it.
  • Papa Wolf: In Ashcroft's flashback, he's upset to find out Royce plans to sell his shares to Gordon Tully, but doesn't strike until Royce insults his daughter.
  • The Password Is Always "Swordfish": The password of a murdered stockbroker was his license plate number. His rival, who hacked his account, points out that it didn't take a genius to figure it out.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: The episode's name refers to the musical How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.
