The beginning of a miserable marriage

The episode begins with what seems like pictures of a happy wedding: a couple entwining their arms before drinking champagne, them cutting the cake together, the groom taking a garter off the bride, and the getaway vehichle.

As Orel recuperates at home, he asks Bloberta why she married Clay. As Bloberta prepares to answer, she flashes back to many years ago.

Everyone in Moralton seems to be getting married, everyone but Bloberta Hymentact. Bloberta is sad because she's being ostracized everywhere, it seems: Ms. Censordoll sent her home because they had enough protesters, she's not part of the family choir because she can't carry a tune at all, and she has no husband or even the prospect of one. It all drove her to drink like her father.

She's late to Milly's wedding to Coach Fakey and is saddened by all the happy couples when she sees someone that gives her hope-a new face, Clay Puppington. She approaches him after the wedding, where he awkwardly explains that he thought it was a regular service. They decide to go to the reception together, which is being protested by Ms. Censordoll and her protesters, including the bride.

Bloberta is surprised to find out that Clay doesn't drink alcohol and coaxes him into trying it by saying that Jesus drank. Soon the two of them are wasted and go dance on the floor. Clay reveals he never plans to marry, but may be reconsidering now that he's drunk and leering at women. A disgusted Bloberta gives up alcohol and starts obsessively cleaning the bar, soon punching Clay in anger.

Clay wakes up with his head in Bloberta's lap. Bloberta points out how much she helped him, how he needed her, and how they should marry. Clay and Bloberta are then seen getting married, and even at the altar they both know it's a mistake, as Clay drinks and Bloberta cleans. They were miserable before they even say their wedding vows.

Back in the present, her answer is 'why not?'

The episode ends with those pictures from before, now showing what really happened: Clay's too busy drinking hard liquor to drink champagne, Bloberta has to cut the cake by herself, Clay is putting the garter on someone else as Bloberta seethes, and Clay is getting arrested for drunk driving as Bloberta cries.

Tropes present:

  • Abusive Parents: Bloberta's mother, Mrs. Hymentact, was very cold toward Bloberta, verbally (and possibly physically) abusive to her father and blatantly favored her siblings over her. Part of the reason Bloberta married Clay was to get away from her mother.
  • Downer Ending: This episode shows just how Clay and Bloberta got stuck in a loveless marriage in the first place.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: The only way Bloberta's father could deal with his wife's constant screaming at him was to be perpetually drunk.
  • I Just Want to Be Loved: Being rejected by everyone around her (including her own family) left Bloberta very lonely and starved for positive attention. The reason she latched onto Clay so hard was because he said she "helped" him come out of his shell by encouraging him to try alcohol.
  • Old Maid: Part of the main reasons Bloberta marries Clay is to avoid becoming this trope.
  • Once More, with Clarity: The episode begins with photos of what appears to be a happy marriage, but the ending reveals them to be photos of Clay's drunken antics during the wedding.
  • Survival Mantra: Bloberta's is "Why not?" Before it was the Non-Answer she gave to Orel when he asks her why she married Clay, she said it every time she was told by someone to go away.
  • Unwanted Spouse: Provides the page image.
