Recap / Monkie Kid S 4 E 10 Jade Emperor

Go To

As the Brotherhood launch their attack on the Celestial Realm, Mei and the others make a step forward to stop them, while Macaque attempts to help MK through his guilt-based crisis.

Tropes:

  • Big "NO!": Red Son lets out a series of these as he’s pulled into the Memory Scroll.
  • But Thou Must!: Invoked by Macaque via the video game he has MK play, as every choice he's offered keeps ending with some sort of bad consequence and his character turning evil. However, Macaque set this game up in order to subvert this, telling MK that real life isn't set with pre-written choices and consequences, and that if any of the choices he has won't end well, he should try something else.
  • Go Out with a Smile: The Jade Emperor has a small, almost smug grin just before Azure cuts him down. It’s one of the first signs that things aren’t exactly as they seem.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: Suggested by the Jade Emperor, as he states that Azure hasn't realized he was merely a piece in someone else's game.
  • Kick the Dog: Even though Red Son is clearly not a threat to him, Azure goes out of his way to trap the young demon within the Scroll during the invasion of the Celestial Realm.
  • My Significance Sense Is Tingling: The moment the Jade Emperor dies, MK, Ne Zha, and Macaque's eyes glow briefly and the three are clearly startled by a strange and unpleasant feeling.
  • Powers That Be: The Jade Emperor invokes this with Azure Lion, telling him that his entire rise to power has been carefully calculated by some unseen force pulling the strings — and, strangely enough, he himself plays into it.
  • "Ray of Hope" Ending: Azure Lion manages to come out victorious in the Brotherhood's siege on the Celestial Realm, slaying the Jade Emperor and taking his place. However, MK, with Macaque's help, has managed to get out of his Heroic BSoD, returning and making the decision to save his friends and Ne Zha from defeat, retreating from battle with them while also swiping the broken scroll piece containing Monkey King, planning to find a way to rescue him in order to give the heroes a chance to stop Azure Lion.
  • Single-Stroke Battle: The battle between Azure Lion and the Jade Emperor goes this way, the screen going black as the two slashed, before the Jade Emperor collapses and perishes from the battle with Azure victorious.
  • Slasher Smile: Azure wears a cruel grin while capturing Red Son.
  • Take a Third Option: Macaque’s advice to MK, bluntly telling him that if he’s so afraid that people will get hurt whether he fights Azure Lion or avoids the problem completely, he should think of something else. Thus, MK opts to instead save his friends from Azure Lion and escape with Monkey King’s broken scroll piece, letting him win but buying time for them to make a plan to stop him.
  • Worf Had the Flu: As Azure Lion goes to slay the Jade Emperor, the deity mentions that if he weren't already close to dying of old age, Azure wouldn't have stood a chance at defeating him.
