Air date: June 13, 2020 (CBC); December 8, 2020 (PBS)note

"By Sled or Snowshoe": When Nina's camera breaks down while helping Grandpa Nat's team study a volcano, she asks Molly to bring her other camera and promises her the chance to see an erupting volcano in return.

"By Sled or Snowshoe" contains the following tropes:

  • Artistic License – Geology: Nina tells Molly she's watching an "exploding volcano." Volcanologists make a distinction between explosive eruptions and effusive eruptions. The former are far more dangerous, while the latter are generally characterized by spectacular lava fountains and gentle lava flows. The volcano Nat's team is watching is definitely experiencing a more effusive eruption. Though it's likely Nina called it an "exploding" volcano to get Molly hyped up and motivated to bring her the camera.
    • Artistic License – Geography: Given Qyah's location so close to Nenana in the Alaska interior, the closest volcanic fields to Qyah are Jumbo Dome and Buzzard Creek, northeast of Healy. Both are dormant. The only active effusive volcanoes in Alaska are on the coasts or islands.
  • Continuity Cavalcade: Tooey lists off Molly's many accomplishments over the past season.
  • Determinator: Exploited. Nina knows that if she sufficiently hypes up the volcano, Molly will stop at nothing to get there.
  • Sled Dogs Through the Snow: Molly convinces Tooey to take her and Layla part of the way by dogsled.
  • Whole Episode Flashback: Molly tells the story of how she got to see a volcano on her vlog.
  • Wintry Auroral Sky: Above spectacular lava fountains, no less.

"The Shortest Birthday": Molly and Tooey plan a bird-watching trip to celebrate winter solstice and Trini's birthday.

"The Shortest Birthday" contains the following tropes:

  • Artistic License – Space: The winter solstice doesn't always fall on December 21 due to axial tilt and wobble. December 21 is simply the average day of the solstice. Justified in that the solstice did fall on the 21st in the year the episode aired, but Molly and Tooey present the solstice as always occurring on Trini's birthday, when that simply isn't the case.
  • Big "NO!": Tooey is devastated to learn Molly forgot the cookies.
  • Birthday Episode: Trini's birthday is on the winter solstice, making it one of the most significant birthdays in Qyah.
  • The Cameo: Finnegan King can be seen in the background of the winter solstice celebration, playing fiddle with Oscar.
  • Happy Birthday to You!: The music over the title card incorporates part of the tune.
